Quote from: armaghniac on February 18, 2025, 01:58:51 PMIn Ballybofey, I was standing beside an affable Donegal person who in turn was chatting to a passing steward. He said that 16,000 were expected, but when the attendance was announced it was 13,000 and something. If the capacity is 17,500 I cannot see where there was space with modern health and safety standards for another 4000.
Funny I thought the same for Armagh vs Tyrone, Athletic grounds is listed as 18500 capacity and attendance was given as 14 something that night, where another 4 would have went I don't know.

Double them up.

Quote from: Tyrone Dreamer on February 18, 2025, 02:38:33 PMI think it's much too simplistic to look at one game like that in isolation. Two years ago was McStay's first year in charge and there was optimism around the new set up. Mayo were unbeaten in the league and coming off the back of hammering Kerry at home. This time around things have gone downhill under McStay and they were coming off a hammering to Galway. The weather was also worse.

Overall the crowds have been decent for the league despite a complete lack of promotion. In the past the gaa would have been delighted with 13/14,000 for Donegal Armagh and a sold out Tralee for Kerry Dublin.

Vaild points but still shouldn't be 50% less in attendance in Machale park. The rules promised edge of seat entertainment yet that Tyrone v Mayo game was as poor as any game last year. In hindsight those that stayed at home was right.

Regardless of the rules if a Kerry v Dublin game isn't selling out in a small capacity venue then the game is in a very bad place.

Ah the poor Mayos are burned out. There were a lot of days out circa 2011-2021.
Galway giving us a hiding last week. The Shite day. Other things to do.
It's about time we gave up on them, we've been told how useless they were for years.  ;D
Looks like Mayo Fans are no longer the Golden Goose for the GAA.
Armagh, Donegal and maybe Derry will make up for the downturn.
So there is nothing for the GAA to worry about.

Tight squeeze last summer in Donegal v Tyrone game. Not that fussed on going back

I wouldn't rely on Derry, Celtic park wasn't packed at the Galway game.
Armagh v Donegal had 77,000 at the 2004 Ulster final in Croke Park, but something like 9000 at the qualifier in Crossmaglen in 2010. As both are in the top half dozen right now, then there will be crowds.

Remember 3 years ago in Clones?

Armagh outnumbered us 10-1. Think it was similar in that year's Ulster final where Derry vastly outnumbered us.

Although it wasn't so much that we were in a terrible position in the rankings. That year a lot of people had just about had it with the negative, fearful football of Declan Bonner's last couple of years.

Jimmy has a buzz going, and rightly so as Donegal had some excellent play.

Could have done without charging u16s for health and safety reasons it seems...

2 out of 4 ain't saying much, could have done it on a game by game basis like before, Celtic Park, Healy, Park, Salthill, Castlebar or Croker aren't going to be anywhere near full for any league matches

Celtic park was near enough full each of the last two years when we played the dubs.

There was a decent crowd in Celtic park, the stand was full and the opposite side of the pitch had a couple of thousand I'd say. Given the time of the game on a Sat and that it was on TV, I thought it was a big crowd.
I was at the Armagh v Tyrone game behind the goals, plenty of standing room available, but the stand was full.
I haven't noticed any major difference in attendances this year than recent years tbh.

Well done to them.  Doubtful Connacht will after John Prenty gave a warning that money had to be made elsewhere with getting rid of the FBD and now probably a new Dome to fund.
Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose
