Sorting out 1 player would lead to bad blood in the panel and long term affect a team more than the benefit him staying. How McShane fell away (though really to a serious ankle injury that was never right again) wasn't really ideal for Tyrone in dealing with future exceptional  players, that could hold them up to the same deals.

Quote from: Wildweasel74 on November 01, 2025, 08:51:07 PMWhy would Mayo clubs sort out a player from another club who can affect future senior championship results, Aye right!

Did Kerry not sort David Clifford? Tyrone not sort Cathal McShane? Few Dubs? Armagh have turned a few soccer heads (significantly less expensive tbf). Mayo can stop him going if they get organised - and obviously if he wants to stay and play GAA.

Cliffords teaching isnt he? Probably not that hard sorted tbf. Apparently both those soccer lads for Armagh had interest from England but obviously an uncertain career path.

The if is the thing there, can't begrudge a young lad wanting to try something new.

+1.

A good opportunity and if anything the fact that he is having to start from scratch in a new sport in a new environment and having to prove himself will help to keep his feet on the ground.

Be great to see him do a few years and come back similar to Glass and give his best years to the GAA, looks a real natural talent that you just love to watch

twohands!!!

Both Kobe Mcdonald and Ben Murphy confirmed as going to Oz

Someone was saying that Kerry "sorted out" Clifford and honestly I doubt they did all that much if anything - I doubt there's many who would consider secondary teaching a cushy number in this day and age (I say this as someone who wouldn't last 5 minutes in a classroom) especially compared to some or the more traditional cushy numbers I've heard about like sales reps who woold only have a handful of actual hours a week or lads in some of the banks who would have been spending a lot of their time entertaining clients.

Combine that with the fact that Kerry have lost a number of players to Oz since the rumours of Clifford going were around it just doesn't seem to make sense to me - I know Clifford is exceptional but if they were able to do something for him surely they would be able to do similar for other talented prospects?

The strongest rumours (in terms of possibly being true) I heard about a player being sorted out in terms of not going to OZ were McShane and given he ended up in a job with Keystone (a Tyrone GAA sponsor) and he spoke out about how getting the job offer was a significant factor in him not signing the contract in Oz, it's not that surprising that people are suspect about it.

The big thing for me is that the money on offer in OZ is of such a level (especially once a player goes beyond the initial rookie contract) is that it's very hard to see even the deepest pockets managing to stump up anything similar in terms of a cash amount.

Clifford spoke about wanting to win All Irelands and emulating the kerry greats. Playing alongside his brother.
Doesn't mean the others didn't have that ambition too, but maybe Clifford is more a homebird.

Kerry have been losing players since before Clifford. Tadgh Kennelly and Tommy Walsh. David Moran was out for a trial.
