You need at least 4 options if a long kick out is going to be an option.
Higgins to start in the half forward line on the opposite side to CD.
That leaves Higgins, Glass, Rogers, CD as options across the midfield with the triangle bunch around them to pick up breaks.
Expect remainder of half back and couple half forwards to attempt to cover majority of breaking ball.

Clucky, Baker have to be short options as don't think its worth risk giving short to any full back.

I think S Downey will be in at WHB and N Toner will start. I can't see R Forbes or D Higgins coming straight into the team. Neither of those selections would help with the lack of height and winning kick outs.
Hopeful of a good performance and win, fearful of Meath winning all the restarts and thumping over 2 pointers for fun.

My thoughts are based on McKenna Cup selection and Forbes, Higgins being away from the squad in pre-season. Just think management will be risk averse in the first game and will go with what they have been able to test.
I would have no doubt both have ability to be starters for Derry, Higgins was getting better as the inter-county season went on, maybe a disappointing SFC final but could have been carrying an injury in it. And he is a big man which we need.

The time for any big experimenting isn't in the first round of the league. We need to get points on the board and secure our place in Div 2 as quickly as possible. Then we can start experimenting a bit more with lads who haven't seen a lot of game time up until that. Getting promotion and to a league final would be nice, but it isn't make or break for our season.

I'll not write him off just yet,
3 points min from first two games would be ok. Meath and Tyrone along with ourselves are the 3 best in the division I reckon.
