The best 'post 93' player to have played for Derry

That's a big statement.
I rate him very highly but think he is still a good bit behind Paddy Bradley , Enda Muldoon and fergal Doherty. Has time on his side though and definitely heading in that direction
He's achieved more than all of them in a Derry jersey. Definitely is a difficult call between him and Paddy Bradley though.

He's definitely won more as a Derry player than the 3 that I named but that doesn't necessarily equate to being a better player (yet).

I would take Shane 10 out of 10. He delivers against all the teams in championship football at the highest level consistently. He is a team player who plays for the team and not himself. He would be a leader in game days and on the training pitch. He didn't have to generate a media campaign to try and get an All star, nor can I see him walk out on his team mates. Muldoon and Doherty had very similar qualities.

Quote from: oakleaflad on February 03, 2025, 02:06:25 PMJust my thoughts from the game.

McNicholl was an obvious upgrade on Lynch out the field, looked much more comfortable on the ball. He wasn't as good off the tee and was likely under instruction to go long on kickouts. Don't think he could have done much about the goals bar his error on the last one. Worth persevering with.

Mark Doherty isn't a corner back. Too far off his man and whilst comfortable in possession isn't a good enough defender to play there.

Baker fisted a score but struggled at times defending and kicked possession away needlessly.

McEvoy was a mixed bag. Needed to be stronger on the penultimate goal but did some good things too. Our entire defense is too susceptible to a back door cut.

Conor Doherty very good in possession but a little lax defensively at times. Still had a good game.

Rogers was very good for second game in a row. Strong runner, a leader in the team and can chip in with a score.

Gilmore a mixed bag too. Can run all day and got his couple scores but kicked away possession too and doesn't look as comfortable on the ball as others.

Glass was very good bar losing his man once or twice in the first half. Like Rogers can kick a score and is an obvious leader in the team.

Tohill did pretty well. Thought the ref was a touch sore on him as thought Kerry fouled him quite a bit on kickouts. Worked hard up and down and kicked a lovely pass inside.

Ethan was a mixed bag too. Hit a couple bad wides in the first half that county players should be scoring. Should also have passed to McGuigan who was clean through one of the times he kicked a goal chance over. Did get his couple scores and assist for the goal McGuigan got and ran hard at the defense as always.

Paul Cassidy took the wrong options on a couple occasions. Sometimes needs to just turn and shoot. Did kick a nice score or two. Played inside a lot and has the ability to make runs and win the ball inside which we struggled with against Tyrone. Worth looking at inside again.

McCarron did alright. Kicked a good two pointer and won a fair share of breaking ball. Almost keeps it too safe at times and nearly seems to lack the guile of a forward. Bounced the ball into tackle in first half when he should have just turned and kicked a point. Does look to have the physicality for county football unlike some of our other fringe players.

Toner was fairly good. Took his frees well and jinked inside to create scoring chances a couple times as well as chipping in himself from play.

McGuigan was good. Always making himself available and kicked a few lovely scores. Made that same run he got his goal from at least 4 or 5 times before he got his reward. A leader in the team.

Murphy was decent. Won a great ball in the corner when McGuigan either felt he was fouled or lost the ball in the sun. Has something different the other forwards.

Subs didn't offer a lot maybe bar Murray who took a score well but dropped another well short.

Think we need to look at options in full back line. Possibly McGrogan once he returns to be an option there along with McCluskey.

Noticed Kerry practicing the palm into the net a lot before the game and they looked for it at every opportunity whereas we didn't and possibly left a goal or two out there.

Think your not far of the mark. Two corner backs not up to it. Baker was grand last year with a host of players in front of him, corner backs had to be equally comfortable scoring as defending but well protected. Now its proper fb play, mark your man and compete to win ball and tackle, he is poor at those basics. Doherty is young, and may develop, but no where near corner back county material yet. Can't see it long term either. Hope I'm wrong about that.

None of those players get anywhere near a Derry team before McGuigan.

He has won stuff they haven't because he is the ultimate team player, our best forward who is running his hole off and making key blocks near goal 1 minute before showing class and composure to get big scores at the other end seconds later.

His leadership is a key component of everything that Derry has achieved over the last few years, his humility and lack of ego the standard that every parent and coach should want their child to aspire to.

These qualities were sadly lacking in some of the other names mentioned here, the key factor in their massive under-achievements.

I think if u look bck at many a game P Bradley was always Double teamed. An exceptional player, who we could be badly doing with nowadays, as we simply don't have enough fire power out upfront. As for what he won, I think if RG of a few years ago was over some of them teams they would won sthing. Have a hard look at some of Derry managers bck then, they had done very little at county level.

Derry championship adopts Down's back-door structure
With the SFC returning from 12 teams to 16, a possible return to a straight knockout format had been discussed as the preferred proposal at a meeting last month but CCC were then asked by a number of clubs to look at alternative options.

THE latest restructure of Derry's senior football championship will see them adopt the Down model for the 2025 season.

At a county committee meeting in Owenbeg this evening, clubs voted to implement a back-door system that will replace the group stage format of last year.

With the SFC returning from 12 teams to 16, a possible return to a straight knockout format had been discussed as the preferred proposal at a meeting last month but CCC were then asked by a number of clubs to look at alternative options.

The clubs voted tonight to adopt the back door format, which will see each team guaranteed two games as opposed to the five they had under this year's elongated and unpopular system.

Derry being drawn in the preliminary round of the Ulster Club SFC also contributed to the change in approach, with the original county final date having to be brought forward.

It was initially intended that the league would run into August and clubs would have access to their county players for the last few games in order to strengthen the league.

But the switch to introduce a back-door system means the 15-round league will now finish two weeks earlier, with two midweek dates added in the middle.

The senior football championship, which was won last year by Newbridge for the first time since 1989, will start three weeks ahead of schedule on the weekend of August 16.

This is the latest in a line of restructures of the championship format in Derry over recent years.

The new format has proven popular in Down and has been adopted by other counties, and was mooted as a potential format for the All-Ireland series by Jarlath Burns.

The eight winners from round one will play against each other in round two, with the eight losers from round one facing each other on the other side of the draw.

Teams that lose their first two games are eliminated and go into relegation playoffs, out of which one team will drop to intermediate.

Two successive victories puts you directly into a quarter-final, with the four teams that win one and lose one of their first two games facing off for the remaining last-eight spots, after which it becomes straight knockout.

Group stage formats will be in play for the intermediate and junior football championships in Derry.

Beaten All-Ireland intermediate finalists Ballinderry are promoted to senior this year along with north Derry trio Faughanvale, Drumsurn and Banagher.

Craigbane, who were narrowly beaten in the Ulster junior final, are promoted to intermediate with Ballerin, Ballymaguigan and Lissan.

Would anyone know the names of all of the club managers in Div.1, or even just the new managers?

This.
He's one of the best forwards I've ever seen play the game. That's not taking away from Mcguigan, just 2 different players.
Derry lost 2 generations of players due to poor county board decision making and appointing of some dubious managers.
I honestly believe in the 00's we had the players to challenge anyone in the country and should have.
We had class in every line on the pitch - Bradley(s), Muldoon, Patsy B, Fergal Doc, Lynch, SML, Johnny McBride, Kevin McGuckin. Even the likes of Joe Diver, Barry McGoldrick and Liam Hinphy were really good on their day. In 06 we spanked then AI champs tyrone, then went out and got beat by Donegal. No consistency and poor in-game maanagement which I always felt was a managerial issue.

Anyway, I digress.
McGuigan is class, a real workhorse and can take a score. Needs to improve shooting off his weaker foot but who doesnt.
One being a class act doesnt take away from the other. Imagine we had both in a team now!

Double teamed or not i'd rather be a forward in PB's era than the era McGuigan has played in. In the games last year v Donegal or Galway anytime he got the ball there were 3 or 4 players ready to pounce on him with 15 men behind the ball.

There are some good players on that list but a lot of them aren't as good as the modern era. The likes of McGuigan, Glass, Ethan Doherty, McKinless, Rogers, McFaul. A post 93 team would be made up of half the current team.
