Election of president questioned
Monday April 30th 2007

WALTER O'CONNOR (37) has been chairman of the Meath Handball Board for the past four years.

He ran for the position of President Elect of the Irish Handball Council (IHC) at the 2007 Congress in the Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar on April 1.

Before that AGM, O'Connor wrote to the IHC, alleging that his was the only one of the three nominations that was received before the official April 9 deadline.

He clarified that he was still running for office, but was doing so 'under protest' because of this alleged discrepancy.

The IHC uses a proportional representation system. No details of the first count were revealed, but when Richard Willoughby of Wicklow's second preferences were distributed, Roscommon's Tony Hannon defeated O'Connor by one vote (43-42). Two votes were deemed 'spoiled.'

Had there been a dead heat, victory would have been decided by the most first preferences.

O'Connor has since demanded access to the electoral register and also to see the two spoiled votes, one of which, he claims, indicated a preference for him.

He has also queried the number of votes distributed and asked for clarification as to whether they have all been accounted for.

O'Connor has also questioned the suspension of standing orders to allow the presidential election take place before the Treasurer's report.

Current IHC President Tom Walsh (Wicklow) told the Irish Independent that, because O'Connor has put the matter in the hands of his solicitor, the Handball Council is not in a position to comment at this time.
