Supporting English soccer teams.

Does that make the English Irish? I wasn't entirely joking with my previous contribution. There's nothing more Irish than hating the GAA. Almost all foreigners don't give a shit.

Yeats put it well: Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy.

To be rather insecure and constantly engage in naval-gazing, when in fact we're absolutely middle-of-the-road and really quite unremarkable. We think we drink too much, our social problems are appalling, unemployment is unsustainable, our youth are apathetic, politicians are all clueless morons, traffic congestion is terrible, roads are wicked etc.  All other (developed) countries have exactly the same problems, we're no different from them. We're ordinary, embrace it.

(Actually, we're a step above many others because we care a little but more and we still haven't quite lost our welcoming reach or basic good manners  ---  not just quite yet.)
