there is an official capacity what your ground can hold but when all things factored in like who you're playing( is there any history between the two teams), how many Stewarts you have available, toilets etc. etc. then the local authority will decide which actual figure you're allowed...So your ground may well hold 20000 but they might only let you have 16000. There are a lot of things done behind the scenes before a game. Meeting with Safety Advisory Groups, Police and so on...

id be surprised if Celtic Park in Derry held 22,000, one of the goal ends doesnt have any area for supporters.

The capacity was restricted to 11000 before the redevelopment work. It was reported that with the new stand and other redevelopment works the capacity would be raised to between 18-20,000, can't seem to find anything official on it. Although derry post report a capacity of 22,000

The game against Donegal last year was as big a crowd as I've seen in Celtic  Park since the down game in 1994. Reported attendence from the donegal game was about 16,000 IIRC, that was fairly close to capacity I would say. So the 18,000 figure mentioned previously is probably about right
The redevelopment work was designed to raise capacity in Celtic Park from 17,000 to 23,402.

Doesn't sound right to me. If that was the case then there would have been room for nearly half as many people again who attended the donegal game? Absolutely no chance. Unless the ulster council were cooking the books

Fair enough. Just doesn't seem right to me though.

It shows that there has been no strategic approach to the development of GAA grounds across the country and that quality has been compromised for capacity.

That's actually going to one of the outputs - we'll be analysing the data to see if venues chosen for qualifiers (although they're mainly home/away now) are the "optimal" location (i.e. minimal travel time) based on expected numbers and venue capacity. By removing the constraint imposed by venue capcaity, we should be able to see which locations might be best suited for stadium development.

There's a couple of things we'll have to estimate including expected support for each county (some average of previous games) and mean distance travelled (for simplicity, we'll take this to be distance to be from the county ground).

With Casement being no more Id say we'd be lucky to get into 5 figures now with the backup grounds being used

Bit of work to be done on the Hyde and Pàirc Sheàin as they can hold around 32,000 and 14,000 respectively.

How is MacHale Park down to 28000? There was over 35000 at the Connacht final in 2004. I think that was pre-new stand as well.

Where did you get the Derry figure from? Especially after me going and finding out the capacity is over 23,000 for you ;). In all seriousness the actual capacity is probably around 20,000, it can certainly hold more than 16,000 though.
