New Zealand PM waves prospect of new flag vote

NEW Zealand may vote next year on changing its flag, newly re-elected prime minister John Key said yesterday, as the country looks to assert an identity independent of colonial ties to Britain.

It will no doubt be heavy on the Maori symbolism, while at the same time every one in power will be from the Anglo Saxon line. Their current flag is probably more reflective of the way their country is run.

While they're changing the flag, they should probably change the name as well, after 300-odd years. Zealand.

Or just go for Aotearoa, the Maori name for the place..

They could do a lot better than the NZ flag in fairness if they had the balls. That butcher's apron is way out of date.

Interestingly the maori aren't big on flags and they only really arrived with the colonial masters. There culture is displayed by wood-carving, hakas and tatoos. So their designs featuring on the new New Zealand flag is the equivalent of a celtic cross being printed on the skin of a lambeg drum.
