Why are tattoos deemed more acceptable on men than women, and why do women usually get tattoos in places where they can't easily see them (back of the neck or across the top of the hips?

However I saw a lady yesterday who had varicose veins tattooed on the back of her legs, and it did look appropriate.

Some of them at least have character but when you see people with those generic tribal tattoos that every hard-man and his mother has you just wonder is it even giving any sense of identity.
