Did he not play in the middle? That was never a position where Mayo had any pressing need for any player, let alone a 33 year-old out of the game since minor. He'd have to have been Dermot Earley or Jack O'Shea reincarnated to make an adequate impact there.

Was he going to be better than any of the established five midfielders Mayo have? I highly doubt it. FF was the only spot where he could have conceivably done a job in that team.
