It's a state visit between friendly neighbouring countries. It's diplomacy. It's part of the process of modern governance and maintaining good international relations. 100 years ago European countries weren't so good at being good neighbours. Frankly I prefer today's approach over the way they did things back then. If it wasn't for living in a time of diplomacy and good relations you'd be getting called up the the army to throw your life away at the government's behest, so cut your whinging.
