Yep - he always played in the cap. Had a column in the Drogheda Independent for years as "The Man In The Cap".


Funny thing is, he only ever wore the cap playing - not in real life and not even in team pictures.

I'm  right though that he was a lon time referee as well as a player?

That's right. He was refereeing while still playing. There's some statistic about a record for consecutive AIF appearances - in between playing in finals with Meath he refereed some finals.

Is that Ringy with the butcher's stroke there? He was fond of that apparently :D Working here in Limerick you hear quite a bit of 'contre' viewpoints about Ring and how he wasn't fit to lace Mackey's boots.

Not sure how to post a photo but surprised no one has posted Gazza's tears. Maybe it would be too obvious but I would say it's the most iconic sporting image of my time.
