Remember the story about how Big Tom and the Mainliners played in New York and attracted an unexpected and perplexed demographic because of the name?

Whole swathes of the BMW region of the country, the so-called Big Tom Belt, will have an official day of mourning.

Border, Midlands, Western - not D4 as the acronym might suggest.

The musical tradition in Ireland is amazing. It doesn't matter what form it takes because it never stops  Big Tom started off in céili music and branched off into country. Another stream became modern traditional. They played in England to people from home and that produced bands like the Smiths and Oasis. Musical class never dies.

Great longevity Big Tom had he was still producing decent tunes in his late 70s and unlike most Irish country music singers he didn't use a fake American accent when singing. RIP.
