Mc kernan is a liability in the half back line, very good corner back nd thats were he should play,Morgan constantly kicking the ball to the middle more or less hoping to win breaks which tyrone didn't even break even on Saturday and therefore give derry an attacking platform in the later part off the game, hit and hope

DaleCooper

Could Morgan handle playing outfield? Great pic of him jumping for ball V Derry. Then he has a two point threat.

Quote from: Goals_Will_Come on February 02, 2026, 12:12:36 PMPersisting again with McKernan at 6 when its been shown more times than enough that it doesn't work. Brilliant wing back but not the man for holding 6. Thought the subs were very strange the other night - chasing a game and taking off your recognised free taker in Jordan and two point kicker in McKernan, while leaving Cullen and Mattie Donnelly on. If we could get a half back line of McKernan, Rory Brennan and Peter Teague, we should quickly start to turn around results. Bigger issues remain in the half forward line for serious progression in the summer with only Ciaran Daly established as a starter at wing forward - can't keep this chopping and changing there week on week and hope something works. Establish the best option for 11 and 12 and give them a run of games there to nail the position down.

Don't think you can play both Teague and Brennan in half back line. I know Teague can kick them from distance. Donegal were playing the Kerry reserve team yesterday but look at the lung busting support runs P Mogan and F Roarty making out of defence (even without ball in 70th min). We have very few making those surging runs. Look at the runs the Derry forwards made to drag out Tyrone defenders and open space for Glass goal. Our attacking plan needs serious work.

Yes did seem to be try to work the ball to McElholm and let him take on players but Derry had McKinlless who is v good and he had help a lot of the times as well so he just layed it off. Not one 2 point opportunity worked for Jordan either which was disappointing.

There's the problem.
Our plan is to give the ball to Canavan or McElholm and expect them to work a miracle every time. Good players but ground conditions and physicality against them.

Would be good to get a look at R McCullagh at 14 in next game if he is fit

I think mgt. are putting too much pressure on McElholm and he should play wing or roving corner forward. Big problem remains with lack/little mobile strength down the middle but playing a rake of half fit/injured players is ludicrous and dispiriting. Strength and conditioning is seemly not taken seriously in any modern sense by management. This is not the 1980s! Is there any plan?

Have to keep Donnelly in half line for me just now. Jordan great wonderful combo with Daly for goal after 1-9 last build around him but need a rangy full forward. Mebbe Jordan CHF when Donnely subbed
Would Kennedy go full forward for a half at least?
Defense ok with minor adjustments. Hope Morgan is really talking them thru games?

Tend to agree a bit too much is expected of McElholm, at the same age Brian McGuigan was playing corner forward
Shouldn't have started the semi final last year when it was clear his impact potential off the bench

DaleCooper

McElholm is a "cherry on top" player at moment, to add to a team thats going well. Hes ideal for last 20 minute impact sub for now as he grows into big boy game. Getting plenty of game time is a good thing obviously, plus he had a knock.

I think the weekend rammed home the point of the lack of physicality in our side.

Of the players in our squad how many would you fancy breaking a tackle on the run? Donnelly? McKernan? Kennedy? Kilpatrick? Devlin maybe?

That's about it for me. We have loads of pace there but lack the power. McElholm and Canavan are great players but they lack the size and power when things get congested.

I thought the deployment of Kennedy inside was such a waste. He's our best midfielder and he's never a forward. McGarrity surely gets a run now if we want to go with a big man inside.

Derry bullied us physically at the weekend. They have inside forwards who can throw their marker off and win that ball in Murray and McGuigan.

Not many major positives, thought Cormac Quinn did well and Donnelly is still the best half forward we have.

Promotion now looking very unlikely.

Putting a big midfielder inside whilst we were getting cleaned out repeatedly at midfield was insane stuff. It smacked of desperation.
If we can't beat Derry we may forget about Division 1 or the all Ireland series for a few years.

Why should we forget about the All Ireland series? I've never heard such hysteria about an aul league game in January. Is likely Kerry will win the next two or three All Irelands as the new rules suit team with the best players and they have them. We don't at the moment but on any given Sunday in summer will give most top teams their fill of it, as Donegal and Dublin found out last year.

Malachy was brought in to rise the remaining members of the 2021 squad and improve with a rich vein of available talent, is increasingly looking like a transitional manager, more questions than answers at 6 8 9 11 14, he's been unlucky that Meyler finished up but playing Kennedy and Kilpatrick anywhere other than MF is total headscratcher, invariably they'll retire too eventually and we might end up bemoaning the lack of quality MF options

Was thinking of an amateur-pro boxing analogy, some of the underage stars might never adapt to senior county, but some who weren't earmarked to graduate to senior might emerge, Conor O'Neill looks a class act at a glance, would have high hopes there

Hand of God

I really struggle to see how Ciaran Daly has managed to hold down a starting spot for us in the last 3/4 years. If he is the best we can find for our half forward line in the county then we are going to seriously struggle to push on in the next few years. Games just pass him by.

Kennedy inside was stupid especially when they didnt even play too many high balls into him. We gave derry the run of midfield as a result. Its clear we dont have a set system. No issue with Kennedy going inside for a few high balls during the game but he needs to be in midfield for kick outs.

Tyrone wont be anywhere near it this summer. All the top teams have already shown the work they put in over the winter. We look exactly the same. There has been zero progress over the last few years.

The getting to an AI semi last year seemed to have covered over most of this but in reality we had zero chance of winning that game.
