A massive international event is taking place on our little island and people are gurning and complaining.... How typically Irish!
What?

It is a meaningless bullshit talking shop which does nothing for "our little island" but disrupt our day to day business for the couple of days it is here.

Sure, it's great.
Amen brother.

Someone explain to me how on earth the hosting of this event is going to do anything for tourism? Can anyone honestly say they can remember any of the other G8s and thought 'Jees thon place looks good, should maybe go there' ???

What's the cost of all the extra security? Extra forces coming in from the UK etc. What's the economic impact on shutting down infrastructure and making people go to work an hour or more early in Belfast?

These things cost millions to host, people are entitled to be sceptical as to where the benefit actually is in hosting them.

Compared to the last G8 summit in Europe, in Genoa 2011, this one is a cakewalk for the authorities. Less than 10 protestors in Enniskillen.

Just read this morning that there's no Southern Hemisphere countries in the G8.

GCHQ intercepted foreign politicians' communications at G20 summits

Exclusive: phones were monitored and fake internet cafes set up to gather information from allies in London in 2009

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/jun/16/gchq-intercepted-communications-g20-summits

Foreign politicians and officials who took part in two G20 summit meetings in London in 2009 had their computers monitored and their phone calls intercepted on the instructions of their British government hosts, according to documents seen by the Guardian. Some delegates were tricked into using internet cafes which had been set up by British intelligence agencies to read their email traffic.

The revelation comes as Britain prepares to host another summit on Monday – for the G8 nations, all of whom attended the 2009 meetings which were the object of the systematic spying. It is likely to lead to some tension among visiting delegates who will want the prime minister to explain whether they were targets in 2009 and whether the exercise is to be repeated this week.

If they all turn up an hour early I would have thought that was good for the economy?

Morale and productivity will be the roof alright! They reckon if you're not in Belfast by 8am there's no point going to work...

In terms of tourism, Ireland is a very easy place to market - especially to the UK and US markets - but Northern Ireland, courtesy of the Troubles, a lack of investment and infrastructure, and a lack or romance, is still a hard sell.

Nobody is daft enough to think that hosting the G8 is going to inspire visitors by itself - there really isn't a tourism market for following political circuses. But by proving NI is a safe and often stunning place to visit, it should begin to make a few shortlists that previously it wouldn't have. There's thousands upon thousands of people head north west from Dublin every year to Donegal. Now it has been brought to their attention that Fermanagh might be worth a stop or a detour.

What about the cost/burden of the extra security? Well by hosting it in Fermanagh, it's probably a fraction of what it would cost to host in a major city, or in a country estate close to a major city. It's the UK's turn to host the summit, so (whether we like it to admit we are in the UK or not) us UK tax payers take the hit. So we're saving money, and gaining profile.

It's only a good thing. Even if I was on the road at 5.45am today because of it.
