Monaghan Minor Football Championship Semi Final

Monaghan Harps 1-12 Scotstown 0-08

The Minor footballers booked their place in the Championship Final (our first since 2006) with a gutsy win over Scotstown in Truagh on Saturday. The lads outscored league winners Scotstown, who edged us out in the league Semi Final, by 1-8 to 0-3 in the second half. The win did come at a cost with Evan Doherty's red card late on, but that shouldn't take away from what was an excellent team performance. Kevin Loughran and Brendan McQuaid missed out through injury – replaced by Donal McCarthy and Conor Forde – although Kevin came on as a sub and made an important contribution.

Our lads started brightly, with Donal McCarthy narrowly off-target from a goal chance early on and although Scotstown kicked the first two points, Evan Doherty fired over after a well-worked one-two with Fearghal McMahon to get us off the mark. Fouls on Evan and Fearghal allowed Fearghal to convert a brace of frees, before Carl Foentjies set up Benin Devlin for a good point from play. Scotstown hit the last two points of the half, though, to take a 0-5 to 0-4 lead in at the interval. We did  need a good save from Ryan Shields to deny Scotstown a goal, although Michael Galligan was narrowly off-target at the other end.

The first three points of the second half were all from frees by Fearghal – two after fouls on himself and one after a foul on Shane Loughran – and our lads took charge when Fearghal poked the ball to the net on 42 minutes. Fearghal won and scored a 30-metre free before landing a fine score from a difficult angle, following a foul on Shane Loughran. A couple of Scotstown frees kept them in contention, but Fearghal landed another free from distance before tapping over a 20-metre effort for another foul on Shane, who got on the end of a long ball from substitute Kevin Loughran to kick a fine point late on. We wish Michael Galligan a quick recovery from his injury and we also hope Conor Forde can shake off his injury problems. The lads will play Castleblayney in the Final, probably on October 14 before the Senior Final.

Team and scorers: Ryan Shields; Pauric Murphy, Niall Treanor, Mustafa Gamal; Turlough Clerkin, Michael Galligan, Benin Devlin (0-1); Evan Doherty (0-1), Shane Maguire; Donal McCarthy, Conor Forde, Shane Loughran (0-1); Carl Foentjies, Fearghal McMahon (1-9, 0-8f), Jason McHugh.

Subs: Kevin Loughran for Forde (inj., H-T), Conor Burns for Galligan (inj., 32), Francis Lynch for McCarthy (38).

Sad news today on the death of Matt Fitzpatrick. Great Gael and great friend of the Ulster Minor Tournament
