Does anyone know where I could get footage from the national league finals from 2002/2003? Didn't Peter score a cheeky lobbed goal in one of those finals? Maybe it's on that compilation, can't view it as im on my mobile.

That was actually in the league semi v Fermanagh in 2003 in Croke Park.

another enjoyable watch from his mid-90's inter county pomp - a video that has been described on another thread as gaelic footballing porn! this would've been a true championship match, with no back door for the loser, and two excellent sides at the time with real all-ireland aspirations. for many tyrone fans this might be their most memorable ulster championship victory ever.

Had the pleasure of him seeing him up close and personal on numerous occasions.  We can all slag him for diving etc...but all great players had their wee faults as well. (Sure didnt Mickey Linden miss a sitter in the AIF in 91 ;) ;))

He was truly one of the greats and my best memory of him is when he played in Ballyholland for EC in the Ulster League a few years ago. He was nearly finished playing then and was still the stand out performer. Most impressive of all was the time he had for the kids after the game. He never moved until every jersey was signed and every photo was taken.

On top of the genius he was a player of mighty strength. How many big fellas went hoppin off him onto the deck in that clip.

Remember a mc Kenna cup final or semi in casement when he was only a cub and had been thrown in at 18 I think. Armagh we're the opposition. Canavan had just destroyed down in the ulster u21 final before it. Tyrone seniors were rank and He scored 11 points for them and both sets of supporters were cheering the cub on

That old Armagh v Tyrone argument will never be resolved
What would people (especially neutrals) say was Canavan's best ever performance?

I was lucky enough to see him from when he was an U21 til when he retired.
I wonder how he would manage in the recent climate with the swarm defences
I can remember some game where there was a pass along the ground where he kinda flicked it on backwards into someone's hands

Was there also some incident in the States where he headed a goal for Tyrone v the Dubs or something or did I dream that.  ;D

i think that wwas the 2002 national league final, mcguigan stepped over the ball and canavan backheeled up to an on-rushing ricey

what makes him the greatest i have seen is that he did things i have never seen any other player do at that level

Those flicks were between him and McGuigan in the 2002 NFL semi final against Mayo in Brewster park, they did a couple of those that day from memory.

Some scores on that clip, plenty where he had to exhibit power as well as skill and so many with the so called weaker foot.

An absolutely amazing player and for me easily the best player of the last 30 years.

haranguerer

Easily the best imo. I'm no tyrone fan, but f**k he was unreal. Everything you admire - accurate, unselfish, intelligent, talented, and ballsy as f**k, as well as being a strong hoor, and having the bit of wickedness you also need.

Cant remember when or who against, but it would have been prob 10 or 12 years ago in clones, he was rushing out, and put one foot behind the other to flick the ball up to a player coming in to put him straight through. Just genius. It was the likes of the first point shown there though that made him great, men hanging off him, bateing away at him, and him still putting it over.

Truly special, and its only now as time passes you realise how lucky you were to see someone like that play. I wish to f**k he was a player manager at the minute!!

Canavan is the best I have ever seen. Broke plenty of Derry hearts down the years, had some great battles with McKeever who was one of the few who could say he came off even with him and that was pre massed defences as well.

Nally Stand

Class player, but really that point starting at the 1 min mark in the video shouldn't be there, the SHOCKING standard of defending is something to behold!! He could have walked it into the net before anyone made an attempt to tackle him!

Does anyone else think he could have went more for goals? Maybe it's cos I missed his most important goal in 05 as I wanted to get to the toilet early before half

Just watched that club highlights now and he got a right few goals in those games.
What I mean is he tended to score some excellent points but unlike players like Stevie McDonnell, Gooch and even Mugsy he was often in on goal but content to take his point.

ONeill

Yep - he'd need to take a good hard look at himself in some of those points. Cop outs. Adrian Cush. Now there was a player.
I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

Been trying to catalogue those 20 scores in the video as to whom the opponents were and the venue - I think I've got them all, not sure of the years yet...

1. I think it was against Donaghmore at Dungannon. Superb score.
2. Was against Moortown, venue I think is Pomeroy
3 & 4. Ulster Championship game, versus Downpatrick at the Athletic Grounds? Might be 1993.
5 - 8. This collection was against Beragh at Carrickmore
9. Again against Donaghmore a few years later, at Pomeroy
10. Against Killyclogher at Healy Park - I think this might have been the 2003 Tyrone SFC final which Errigal Ciaran lost.
11 & 12. Both away to Crossmaglen in the Ulster Championship
13 - 15. Again in Crossmaglen, this time in Clones
16 - 17. Two scores against Balliderry at Clones, was an Ulster Championship semi final but I can't remember the year off hand
18 - 20. Two goals and a point against Trillick in Fintona - First Round of the Tyrone SFC in 2006, his first club championship game after his retirement from Intercounty football. I think I might have a photo of his en route to his second goal. Found my old eyewitness report of that game from the old board.

Edit: Knew that I had a photo of Canavan en route to scoring one of those goals against Trillick, I think this is the first one.

the ballinderry game was 2002/03 aswell i think, after errigal knocked Cross out.
i remember a group of ballinderry players standing infront of us at teh errigal cross game that year and one of them saying
' fck we have to beat one of these two teams!'
those 3 errigal v cross games where as good as it gets in club football

There was two games between Ballinderry and Errigal in 2006 which I thought were amazing battles. Ballinderry eventually won the replay but I remember Canavan being immense in the drawn game, not for scoring, but for cuteness and setting up the play. At the other end Gilligan was untouchable. Course then them diesel smugglers won in the final on the wettest and windiest day since Noah loaded up the boat.
