The sentence is well deserved. However, I do not understand it. There are people that are never did anything for themselves but who attempt to leech off others from day 1. However, Carey was a person who could put in time to train and build toward something, he may have been talented but this was never easy.
Owing to his fame, he could have made an honest buck in sales, having ghost written articles in the paper etc. He got more from the fraud than from regular work, but he didn't get enough to retire in Brazil and jail was the inevitable and predictable outcome. Very strange.

They had a home in Monkstown, on Dublin's south side, and a chalet in the Swiss Alps.

Carey's pursuit of great riches had led to this precipice. In 2011, in the maw of the economic crash, the commercial court issued a judgment of €9.5 million against Carey and Newman. What he did next destroyed his life and severely wounded the lives of tens of others who were grotesquely scammed.

That doesn't explain the Carey family situation though. His brother and sister are up on money laundering charges as well. Where it all began could hide far darker secrets.

It's easy to become more self-centred and egotistical.
