Tittle-tattle and gossips sells, probably.
What possible 'issues' would lead to such scummy behaviour?... and using his hurling genius to exploit/con people in such a way makes it all the more loathsome. It's horrendous a man who was loved and reveered by so many turns out to be the dregs of humanity..

Were you opposed to the genre of true crime all along or just when a hurler became the topic?

He used his fame to take advantage, but clearly the man has underlying issues.

If someone wants to make a few quid out of a book and exploit the situation, then we just have to accept that.

Ah now don't be playing the oul mental health card

Most times the underlying issue is that a fella is just a bit of a cnut

Are you a psychologist or seen his medical notes? Issue he has is a severe lack of morals...

I don't disagree with you and to fake cancer to con people is appaling...

I grew up idolising the man. Still do to an extent. Will happily throw down with any clearly incorrect tosspot who continues to insist that Brian Whelahan was better and deserved to be on the Team of the Millennium ahead of him.

But he's a disgrace. DJ did rightly from "being DJ Carey" in his playing days. Think he got a bit too fond of the life of celebrity and its trappings.

Yeah, absolutely fantastic hurler and one of the best of his generation when Kilkenny weren't winning things by the bucket load, you will never be able to take that away from him.

Yeah JC never will be able to, but doesn't amount to anything now. He will be glossed over for ever more in the game.
Instead of being talked about with the absolute greats he will more or less be erased now. His own doing.

Always got the impression from the KK squads around that time that he was never really that popular, always made me wonder what it was about him. Even back then they seemed to have known something about him.

DJ was always popular, both inside and outside of Kilkenny, and continued to be long after he retired. He was a highly accomplished and well regarded coach. To me, he was the first true superstar of the GAA in the modern era, and he bridged several eras in the GAA. He was winning All Irelands in the old Croke Park rememeber.

I remember the first year they introduced the back door in the hurling championship in 1997, where the Munster/Leinster runners-up played Galway/Antrim. They'd been poor enough for a few years and were a distant third behind Offaly and Wexford in Leinster. They were getting outplayed by Galway in Thurles and he scored either 2-7 or 2-8 to essentially win it for them on his own. I was only 10 and it's still up there with the greatest individual performances I've ever seen.

But his life was a lie and he'll have to live with that.

Milltown Row2

Champion handballer also. But I'm sorry to say, pretty dead to me now.

I can get financial ruin, and how living to certain standards may push someone to cook the books and cream something off the top, but this person used (for me anyways) cancer as method to steal peoples money..

The fact that his sister was in on it too shows a serious lack of awareness when the shit was going to hit the fan, cause I'm unsure as to how this was going to be hidden forever!
