In Mayo we have a few interesting town names:

Killala: named in honour of the crusades.
Shrule: named after the local nuns vow of silence (Shh - rule).
Bohola: Bó Hola - after a cow that could speak spanish.

I just recently discovered that Portlaoise used to be known as Maryborough, and was named after Queen Mary of England.  Were there many towns which changed name after independence I only know of a few,

Kingstown - Now Dun Laoghaire

Sorry to be pedantic but your very first one is wrong.  Kingstown was renamed before independence.

QuoteDún Laoghaire derives its name from the Fort (Dún) of Laoghaire. King Laoghaire was the ancient High King of Ireland before the invasion of the Vikings. It was also named Kingstown by King George IV to honour his visit to the town, and it retained this name through the Victorian Era until just before the declaration of Irish Independence in 1920, when the Town Council voted to rename the town Dún Laoghaire.

Farrandeelin

Binghamstown, (An Geata Mór) on the Mullet peninsula.

Mountfalcon, a part of my own parish still left Anglicised - named after Lord Mountfalcon, I believe.

There is also a townland outside Ballintubber, Portroyal, which was 'corrupted' from Partraí. There is a place called Partry nearby though.

Sadly I don't plan that far ahead. I just thought about funny sounding names in my own county. For the first time ever I wished I was from Meath. Nobber is crying out for a link to British Imperialism.

My neighbouring townland, Clatterstown should be linked to British subjugation too, if there's any justice.

Many years ago a BBC NI newsreader took great pleasure in announcing an "apology" along the following lines on air one evening:

"In my report on a news item yesterday, I erroneously referred to the village of Hackballs Cross as 'Hackbollocks Cross'. I would like to apologise for any confusion this may have caused."

The same boy later moved to England, where he does the Voiceover on some very famous programmes.

Anyhow, when it comes to Brit names etc, I'm surprised no-one has brought up this place:

"If you come in here again, you'd better bring guns"
"We don't need guns"
"Yes you fuckin' do"

Orior "I've been to Killiman"
Neville: "Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaat!!!!!!!!!!! Where are you going now?"
Orior "To Killmore"
Nevillle: "Get tha fa outta oh that vehicle you orish ****"
