Quote from: Lár na páirce 1 on September 29, 2025, 06:39:46 PMPG1 got their 5th place finish in league secured and a 4th place finish in championship not a great year for the challengers and John Mac and his wealthy backroom team have stepped away today.

Hard to see where they go from here.

Just don't seem to be a Championship club.

I would say that's a bit harsh. They are pretty much in the top four in the county which isn't bad. There are just better teams than them.

I'd say this is a fair assessment.

For a single code club I would be questioning that if I were them. But maybe top 4 is good enough.

I'd claim that those are some harsh words written towards JMK, he is easily Portglenones most successful manager surely?

I dunno about this... Everyone wants to be better but if you're there or thereabouts to top four and you get to the semi finals it isn't a failure. Dunloy are a good team and beat St Brigids too who some people might have fancied to go and win it this year (I think they have a good bit to go but that's an aside). Yes I'm sure they would want to do better but it's not a monumental failure.

Dunloys pace seemed frightening on Friday night , the athleticism of those lads is amazing to watch.

I think the final will serve up a tasty one! Is it in Corrgian?

Totally from the outside looking in, I'd suggest there is a few green eyes being cast towards John from inside the club.

Paying 600 a session being in the top 4 isn't bad

Game is def in Corrigan Park. The club got an email yesterday to confirm the time, venue and that it was live on TG4.

Id imagine it being on TG4 confirms its in corrigan

A lot of very unfair and harsh words about Portglenone following on from Friday night.

Firstly they were beaten by a better team. It happens in all sports, sometimes you come up against a better side.

Regardless of who you bring in to manage and coach a panel, if there's a team out there you come up against is better you end up losing. The most well paid and best management in Ireland sometimes cant get a team over the line.

Personally i felt we wouldn't win that game on Friday night as they were favorites in my opinion. By half time we were level after being the better team and feared that they might just be getting their feet in the game. unfortunately for them we pushed on and deservedly won the game.

Maybe we will get some credit for being better and it not a fault of Portglenone's management/players etc that the result went that way.

Portglenone are a very well run club from top to bottom and have done a tone of work at underage level in both football and the camogie. They were impressive against us in the U16A final and in the camogie they are the team to beat at feile/U16 grade. Lots of great work going on at the club.

Do you think if they were dual code they would have an excuse for being lower?   Sometimes a club can hit the jackpot with a group of exceptional athletes who can turn their hand to anything.

No I would just expect a single code club to be more competitive.
No doubt you can hit and exceptional group in one go, but I would have thought this one will stick with them for a bit.

Personally, I think being dual can help clubs to a point unless they get consistent good runs in both codes which can eventually lead to fatigue.

I'd go back to a comment Damian Cassidy made in the Cargin vs Aghagallon commentary, the day before Dunloy vs St Brigids. He said St Brigids would win as in their bye week they were in Dublin playing a challenge football match while Dunloy had a Championship hurling match. All I could thing of at that time was how I'd far rather the team had the intensity of a championship hurling match over travelling for a football challenge match.
