THE Duke of Edinburgh is expected to wake up in hospital on Christmas morning, where he is recuperating following treatment for a blocked coronary artery.
Philip, 90, was said to be in "good spirits" today as he was visited by members of the royal family, including the Queen and the Prince of Wales.
The Earl of Wessex, the Princess Royal, the Duke of York and the Duchess of Cornwall also visited the Duke's bedside at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge.
Earlier Buckingham Palace said Philip had a "good night" following the coronary stent procedure yesterday evening and was "eager to leave".
He is expected to remain under observation for a short period but no further details have been given about when he will be discharged.
The Queen was flown to Papworth this morning from Sandringham, her private Norfolk estate, where the royal family is spending Christmas.
The royal helicopter touched down near the hospital and the visitors were driven in a convoy of two Range Rovers and a third car.
The royal party returned to the helicopter after the 45-minute visit and was flown away shortly before midday, although the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall travelled separately.
It is thought to be the first time the Duke will miss the Christmas morning service at Sandringham, which has become an annual tradition for the royal family since the early 1990s.
Prior to this they often spent Christmas at Windsor Castle, but this was brought to an end following the fire in November 1992.
Buckingham Palace has said the service will go ahead as planned and no changes to the royal family's celebrations tomorrow are expected.
Philip was taken to the specialist heart hospital last night after complaining of chest pains, and, following tests, a blocked artery was discovered by doctors.
He underwent an "invasive procedure of coronary stenting", which was declared a success.
Papworth describes itself as the UK's largest specialist cardiothoracic hospital and the country's main heart and lung transplant centre and carries out 2,500 stent procedures a year.

maybe he has already popped his clogs and they don't want to spoil his wifes speech.

Never underestimate the power of complaining

Wee sis (surgeon) says chances are he has had a heart attack if he got a stent, they're just not using the phrase.

QuoteNice.

Its in France, and as far as I know he hasn't visited there, but he could probably insult the people there with the casual racism that he has become known for.

Maybe a bit of royal inbreeding excuses the racist comments of Britains most adored family

For all the injustices that his wife's government have carried out while he has been married to her, and which by his silence he has given consent.

Also by the number of racist comments he has voiced while on royal duty and are therefore acceptable by the british media and the majority of the british people, unless i have missed their protests against racist remarks which are not from professional footballers.

Ireland produced Louis Walsh, Jedward, Bono and Sir. Bob Geldoff, for crimes against humanity surely the entire nation is culpable.

He is actually Phillip the German, he is a Greek as my baby finger.

In fact the current Royal family are far more British than German relative to him, sure the British King George VI wife was Scottish and Princess Diana was English, so their bloodline has had some native injection.

Crimes against humanity? I would hazard a guess Bob Geldof and Bono have done a lot more for humanity than you. You complete and utter idiot.

What a plank of wood, ever hear of tongue in cheek.

By the way Bono is a fan of asking other people to give up their money to relieve poverty as in demanding countries forgive debt to relieve povety but is very quick to threaten moving abroad so as to avoid paying Irish tax which could be used to relieve poverty in Ireland.
