Try an animal shelter. Give an animal down on its luck, a new home.

I asked the woman to get me a turtle for Christmas. Whenever I was young we had one. It was only a small one that wouldnt of grew more than three inches. Does anyone know which breed this would be?

Sounds about right. I was about six when we had one. Any idea of the size these can grow to?

Yeah man they grow to about 66 inches (thats 5'6") and they can turn nasty when fully grown. The secret is to kill them and make Steup (mixture of Stew and soup) when they're about 36"...hope that helps...ohh and you could make a lovely meel with them too :D
I can swim a little but i can't fly an inch

You sure it isn't a Hermann tortoise, we got one two years ago and it hasn't grown much, about 3 inches in total (insert lame joke). Terrapin is the boyo that goes in the water.

Try an animal shelter. Give an animal down on its luck, a new home.

This, you get the kids what they want and the added feel good factor.
