CutePDF is useful. Sets up a printer driver to allow any application print to PDF. Handy to printing webpages, tickets etc to PDF for later printing or emailing.

GIMP is a bit fiddly for the layman. Paint.NET is excellent if you want something simpler with which to manipulate images
