Forgive me, but it seems dumb to hire a specialist for this. Aren't coaches supposed to be motivating the players? Wouldn't a coach who knew the players personally be more likely to know what to say to a particular player than a psychologist? Why would they think that the same talk would be equally effective on everyone? There are players who get demoralised when they have a bad day and others who become more determined from the same experience.

An expert in this area if had acquired time should become familiar with each player. Very few coaches have the particular skill set that experts have which include fostering team spirit and cohesion, enhancing confidence, dealing with anxiety of up coming important games, keeping athletes motivated during prolonged seasons if motivation drops. Devising strategies so players can maintain concentration to make the right decisions in the heat of battle. There may be numerous outside factors that contribute to a players form dropping and your average coach may have difficulty getting to the bottom of this in an appropriate manner without doing harm. So there may be merits of getting those with expertise and experience on board. Although the mental side is a small part of the game, it's a very important part.
