Does anyone know how I can convert the audio of a music DVD to a format which I can play on an MP3 player?

DVD or CD? No problem with CDs, the like of Real Player can "rip" them.
If at first you don't succeed, then goto Plan B

A programme called Roxio will allow you to do that. Real player will also do it. You could also do it by connecting DVD plaver to PC leaving out the video (yellow) lead. Just record the audio signal, but you may still require a programme to convert it. I hope this helps.

Think audacity would do this. Well it should do the PCM t

o mp3 conversion. Not sure about the rip
It's a lot easier to sing karaoke than to sing opera

Loads of ways of doing this. One would be to:

1. Rip your DVD to it's VOB files using something like SmartRipper (http://smartripper.en.softonic.com/) or DVDShrink (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cd_dvd/copy_dvd/dvd_shrink.cfm)
2. Use DVD2AVI (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/general/download_splash.cfm/dvd2avi) to open the VOB files.
3. Select your in and out points in the preview window
4. Set audio output method to 'decode to wav'
5. Select File/Save avi

Edit: I see you want an MP3 file.

6. Open the wav in an audio editor like Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) or GoldWave (http://download.cnet.com/GoldWave/3000-2170_4-10001099.html) and Save as MP3.
