Minor Footballers Start With a Win

Tyrone minor footballers opened their 2011 league campaign with a comprehensive nine point victory over Antrim in Dungannon this afternoon.  Playing without any of the Academy players the Tyrone men settled quickly and were 1-2 to no score up within six minutes.  Dan McNulty scored the goal before Sean Hackett and Ryan Mayse added points.  The Antrim men didn't crumble though and were level after a quarter of an hour through the excellent place kicking of Peter McReynolds and Mark Cummings.  Tyrone playing against the wind took control once again through a Mayse goal from close range and managed to lead the Saffrons 2-5 to 0-8 at the break.

Antrim only scored once from play in the second half as Tyrone stretched away.  Second half substitute Cahir McCullagh slotted two from play and Newtownstewart man Ryan Mayse added another 0-4.  The result was marred by the news that centre half back Niall Dillon looks like he may have suffered a broken leg.

Strain makes Donegal pay the penalty

Fermanagh 2-04 Donegal 0-09

John Joe Strain converted a penalty in injury time as Fermanagh snatched victory in their opening Ulster Minor League game against Donegal at Brewster Park on Saturday.

Fermanagh were trailing by two points as the game drew to a close but substitute Thomas McCaffrey fed Ruairi Corrigan who was hauled down leaving the referee no option but to award a penalty.

And Strain held his nerve to tuck the resulting kick into the back of the net to secure an opening victory for Mark Henry's side.

Henry was delighted to see his side collect the win after suffering a couple of set backs in the second half.

"We lost Philip Leonard to injury and had Conor Sherlock sent off for two yellow cards but I was pleased that we didn't let that knock us off our stride. I also think that the scoreline was a bit deceiving. When you see we only scored 2-04 it might seem that we stole the win but we had a lot of possession throughout the game but just didn't put the ball over the bar. We certainly were not out-classed or overawed," he commented.

Fermanagh had enjoyed the better of things in the possession stakes during the first half but went in trailing by two points at the break, 0-05 to 0-03, due to racking up nine wides over the period compared to Donegal's three.

The home side had the advantage of the breeze in the first period and had scores from Ruairi Corrigan, Eddie Courtney and Bryan Owens although both Courtney and Ruairi McGrade missed scoreable frees.

It also took a superb save from the Donegal goalkeeper to deny Courtney a goal following a god break up the pitch from half back Strain.

The contest was more even in terms of possession in the second half but Donegal were more clinical as they increased their advantage to four points, 0-07 to 0-03.

The sides then swapped scores with McGrade lobbing over a free for Fermanagh before the home outfit grabbed their first goal of the game. After Leonard had been injured and Sherlock sent off, Henry brought on Shane Lynch and Thomas McCaffrey, both of whom made a positive impact on proceedings.

Indeed McCaffrey bagged the first Fermanagh goal as he got on the end of a Corrigan pass before side-stepping the goalkeeper and slotting to the net to reduce the gap to a point.

Donegal tagged on another point to put them two up and that looked to be enough to clinch the win but then came the penalty which Strain converted to give Fermanagh a winning start to their campaign.

Best for Fermanagh on the day were Strain and full back Che Cullen in defence along with wing forward Ruairi Corrigan.

Minor League Defeat For Tyrone

Derry 2-15  Tyrone 1-09

Tyrone Minors suffered defeat at Celtic Park this afternoon when they lost to Derry in round two of the Ulster Minor League. Mickey Donnelly's team had been doing reasonably well and were trailing by only one point ten minutes into the second half when Derry were awarded a fortuitous penalty. The resultant goal left four points between the side and the home side kicked on strongly after that to record a fine 2-15 to 1-9 victory over their great rivals. Ryan Mayse was the standout player on the field scoring 1-5 for his team while second half substitute Conor Mallon played very well when introduced into the game.
