This time of year every paper or website throws out their county rankings for the year.

Is it not time for the GAA to introduce official rankings on an annual basis, based upon this years Championship with lower weightings included for the National league and the previous years championship.

Every major sport has official rankings ,including rugby and cricket and there probably aren't even 20 teams competing seriously at these sports.

This would cost the GAA nothing and would be an extra bit of free publicity.

like every thing else in the GAA it would get too personal .

It would be impossible to create any sort of meaningful rankings in a sport that prioritises a knock out competition, in which almost half the teams involved play as little as three games, to the extent that Gaelic football does.

Isn't ranking the teams what the national leagues are for?

Producing an alternative set of rankings would generate all manner of acrimony and further undermine the national league's standing as a competition.

The NFL would be reflective of a current season. But a true ranking would need to span several. No other sport relies on a single year competition to determine ranking.

And also the amount of money the county generates for the GAA...

The league is only one competition. If a team wins the AI from Division 2, are they not a top 8 team?

If there was sufficient incentive for league form to be genuine then it would be an abberation for a team outside the top division to win the championship.
