I am sure you are right Johnney.  That change in 200 odd years is one of the tragedies of Irish history.  How different things might have been in this country. :( :( :(

I read a very good article about King Billy and the glorious revolution of 1688 (which was anything but glorious for Ireland). Apparently the big difference between James and Billy was that the former wanted a system where the monarch had absolute power and Billy was more into the modern style of individual rights and the rule of Parliament. anyway the writer said something I found strange- that Billy upheld the rights of individuals. I couldn't tally that with anything I knew about Irish history. And he went on to say that Billy wanted to extend the same system to Ireland but was overruled by the Protestant settlers in Ulster who preferred to keep the old system with them at the top and the Taigs below. Imagine if Billy had pushed them how different Irish history would have been.  Instead of the penal laws and the rest that followed.          It is all explained in this book

It's back to the drawing board for my friend I'm afraid. He phoned the pub in Clough today but they're not showing the match as it clashes with the televising of the Papal Mass with the Beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, Cofton Park, Birmingham. He's not sure what to do now

Has he tried any of the bars in Greyabbey? They always have drinks promotions on during the games.

Do the patrons drink it, or throw the glasses at the screen?

Rumour has it Dougal, that a snatch-squad has been organised in Strabane (with the usual lethality!) to 'rescue' your friend from the clutches of satanic puritanicals to be brought to the bosom of gaelic glory for the gratification of his sanctified soul for the duration of the occasion.

Can't verify the veracity of it though, myself, verily  ;)
Carlsberg don't do Gombeenocracies, but by jaysus if they did...

You're almost correct there Fear, except that the snatch squad is not from Strabane but rather Newbuildings where he can be sure that every pub will be showing the match. Hope to see you at the Horslips gig in Belfast in December

Tell him to drive to Portavogie and ask for directions to Ballygalget club.

Go to the Quays pub/restaurant at the corner of the harbour, the owner is a lad Adair, tell him I sent you and you want to watch RTE2.

It'll not be a problem   ;D

They drink it, first.  ;) Horrible place Greyabbey, makes Lurgan seem exotic.
