"Padraic Joyce Turns Down Laois"

From Hogan Stand

"Joyce turns down Laois

12 August 2010

Padraic Joyce has rebuffed attempts by Laois to lure him to the midlands.

The veteran Galway attacker, who could continue on playing next year, is understood to have spoken to Laois officials in recent days about the possibility of him succeeding Sean Dempsey as senior football manager.

He is the latest high-profile name to have turned down the O'Moore County. Seamus McEnaney, who has committed to Monaghan for three more years, and former Kerry midfielder Darragh O Se were also approached.

Pat Roe, who has been nominated for the position along with Mick O'Dwyer and Ollie Phelan, this week criticised the Laois county board for stalling on the appointment of a new manager."

Where did Laois get this notion out of? The man hasn't even made a decision about his retirement yet and they want him to become their manager? It's a bit strange!

The incompetence is frightening... No such thing as behind closed door negotiations!

I presume there must be some link there between someone involved in Laois GAA circles and Joyce- otherwise its just bizzare asking a intercounty footballer who has not even retired yet...

Laois must be running out of names to call soon ... surely they will get to Pat Roe eventually???

How must he feel after Laois have approached every other possible canditate (Dara, Banty, Joyce) and then they will probably end up offering it to him and I doubt with the same financial resources available to him either!

What in the name of god inspired them to ask Joyce? Has he any coaching experience at all?

Pat Roe is screaming for the job, but instead they have offered it to two IC players with basically no managerial experience what so ever. Harsh  :P

The county board have other names on their list before they ask Roe. Some of them include Whelan, Mortimor, Sheflin, Jayo, Gooch, and Pat Spilane. They know what they're doing.

Where is Joyce living? Heard rumours of a Monaghan/Clontibret link.

He's still living around Tuam as far as I know but he's engaged to a girl from Monaghan.

Nothing is bizarre in Laois, anything could happen.
I expect they will ask Raymond Domenech next,he has experience with another Les Bleus team so there is a link there.

Maybe they should offer the job to Mick Lawlor who had so much to say about the wrong methods of training, the wrong tactics and the wrong everything about Dempsey in the Leinster Express before during and after important matches when Dempsey was in the middle of his term.  There is far too much made of the title "Manager" in counties such as Laois and it is about time for a training panel that can work together to be assembled like old days. If that panel of three has to be Lawlor, Roe and Dempsey all working together for the benefit of the county they might, just might, get a panel of players all working together for the county as well.  The former three will obviously never work together but surely there should be three good men in the county who can get their heads together.  Instead we have, in the right corner, The Justice for Donie Brennan Brigade, and in the left corner Criticise The Manager Brigade etc, etc. and on and on it goes, year after year.

The problem is they will end up with neither manager, team or for that matter supporters. I hate to say this but I have got to the stage where I could not care less if they never won another game because I am sick and tired of the way every manager ends up being treated from the time of Tom Cribben to the latest episode with Dempsey.  Last week I tore a Laois sticker off the back of my jeep and when I find one I will replace it with a Dubs one.  In fact, outside of Pat Roe does anyone want the Laois job?  You'd want to be off your rocker !  Maybe Colm Parkinson has a point after all.

However bad things get don't ever cross over to the dark side and put anything blue & navy on your car.
The bit in bold is the whole problem with Laois in both football and hurling,no one is willing to work "together" in the county,it be a disaster anyways they all think they know more than the other, sure the players thought they knew more than Micko.

I actually think they should give Mick Lawlor the job,if not him then maybe Trudi Lalor might be available, she could sing Lovely Laois to them before every game.

What about Michael Dempsey? He must have picked up a few tips from Cody on training a bunch of fellas, then why would he want to leave a county winning All Ireland's every year to come back home to Laois where the people are so friendly and so fine (Go Trudi !)

To be fair Mick Lawlor called it like it was week in week out and certainly seemed to take no joy in how uncompetitive Laois have become at top intercounty level. Most of his articles were refreshing to read as he hit the nail on the head more often than not

Sean had his go at it- disclipline, fitness and morale all improved in his second year with the team but that didnt escape the fact that the team were utterly clueless in possession of the ball once it got past midfield. It was painful to watch in Tullamore that night against Meath. Granted the resources he had at his disposal were not great but they are certainly good enough to produce a better more competitive brand of football than we've produced over last 2 years. So in this instance it was definitely a time for change of management.

Though Bud, i have to agree that the mess the county board are making of finding a replacement is damaging players and supporters alike. Just have a read the new manager thread on Laoistalk.com and you'll get a feeling for the mood within the county!

Michael Dempsey would be the most interesting option i think within the county though after his brother left on such bad terms i cant see this happening.

It was stated on the afternoon RTE sports programme that Armagh man Justin McNulty has been given this job!

Not bad- just in time for the 2nd round of the Senior championship next week
