Gleann Éallaigh Naomh Seosamh are pleased to announce details of the 2010 Rockin' by the River Festival which takes place in Plumbridge from Sunday 18th July to Sunday 25th July. The action packed week-long festival of culture and community organised activity has something to suit all ages. One of the main attractions will be top international musician, Sharon Shannon. The accordionist from Ireland has achieved legendary status throughout the world

Sunday 18th July- Sharon Shannon and band. (Doors 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets on sale from local shops priced £22.50

Monday 19th July: Sperrin Ramble

Tuesday 20th July: Teenage Disco (Kiddies disco 8pm – 9.30. Teen disco 10pm to 12)

Wednesday 21st July: Massive Bingo Bonanza (£3,500 cash must go. Starts at 9pm)

Thursday 22nd July: Strictly Come Dancing

Friday 23rd July: Robert Mizzell from 10pm. Country disco before with DJ Bernie of Q101 West. Admission £10 at door

Saturday 24th July:
Vintage Rally and Richie Kavanagh LIVE! (Steam engines, sheep shearing, vintage display)
More Power to Your Elbow live in the Marquee. Adm £10

Sunday 25th July:
Family Fun Day Bouncy castles, football blitzes, circus acts, drive the nail etc

The sleepy north-west village of Plumbridge will be overcome with revellers for the next week as the 2010 'Rockin' by the River' Festival kicks off.

The annual bash attracts punters from far and wide and its growing reputation means this year's crowd is expected to the biggest yet. In a highly impressive programme of events the highlight is surely the performance of Irish music legend Sharon Shannon and her band this Sunday night (18th July).

It is a credit to organisers to have secured such a big name and shows the ambition harboured by those involved – while the crowd will be big, Plumbridge itself will surely rank as perhaps the smallest place Shannon has visited in years.

Shannon kicks off the festival this Sunday and it runs for a full week, culminating with The Miracles in the marquee on Sunday 25th July.


Other big names will of course be in attendance over the course of the week – Robert Mizzell, More Power To Your Elbow and the The Miracles to names but three.


Perhaps the most striking thing about the line-up is the diversity. Robert Mizzell will delight the country music fans, while More Power To Your Elbow will bring their usual raucous show for anyone looking to blow off some steam, and the Moy-based band often attract a younger crowd. The Bingo and Strictly Come Dancing bring crowds in their droves, and the various events during the day on Saturday and Sunday mean there really is, to borrow a cliché, something for everyone.


This hasn't just happened by accident either. Run by Glenelly St. Joseph's GFC, the club have been committed to ensuring the festival doesn't exclude anyone. Club chairperson Kellie Morris insists variety is the spice of life.

"We try to cater for everyone in the festival as much as is possible, and we try to make sure all age groups and tastes have something they can enjoy. We get the younger crowds coming for their night out at the weekend, and Saturday and Sunday are great family days out. I think we've achieved our goal of catering for everyone and we're expecting to see a lot of new and old faces throughout the week."

She added: "The club has tried to move the festival on every year and make it that bit better. With a music legend like Sharon Shannon coming this year we've taken it up a notch and we expect to see people that maybe wouldn't have been here otherwise. I think when we do get newcomers they'll see just how good an event this festival is and they'll want to come back again next year."

Kellie said that excitement is already building around Plumbridge as people gear themselves up what's sure to be a hectic week.

"You can feel a buzz around the place, that's for sure, and it's great to see that. It's brilliant to see the place really come alive for this week every year and it's fantastic for community spirit. If there wasn't here then a lot of people might not have heard of Plumbridge, never mind been here, so it really puts the place on the map."

The next week will see the fruition of almost a year's work for the festival committee, and proves that with the necessary drive and vision, anything is possible. Everything is reliant on volunteer effort and it is clear an immense amount of thought and work is involved. Preparation for the Strictly Come Dancing event has been going on for weeks now as participants and organisers have been practicing their moves in Strabane's St Pat's Hall, all set to dazzle next Thursday night (22nd) when a sell-out crowd is expected.

I used to go to the high school in Plumbridge. Great wee school is was too. The school was tumbled to the ground earlier in the year, after closing down a few years ago.
