Five GAA Managers are paid according to TV3 investigation

High ranking officials from five County Boards have admitted that their board have made payments to senior managers that break GAA rules and could also potentially have serious consequences with the Revenue Commissioners.

It follows an investigation into the practice carried out by TV3's Gaelic Games Correspondent Kieran McSweeney broadcast on this evening's TV3 News at 5.30....

Anyone know where bears do their poo? Perhaps TV3 should get on the case!

Talking about revenue commissioners on TV3 now.

A misunderstanding about where tax liability lies is emerging in my view - would it not be the the employer ie gaa county boards rather than employee ie the manager who is responsible for tax and failure to deduct PRSI etc ?

GAA director general Páraic Duffy launched his annual report today and appears to be eager to tackle the issue of payments to managers.

Duffy confirmed that he wants to establish a committee later this year to examine the current situation.

'There is more than enough evidence to allow us conclude that some are accepting payment is excess of what is permitted,' he said in the report.

Other major talking points of the report include Duffy's concerns over the amount of money being spent by inter county teams and his intentions to address a 'clear imbalance' in the suspension system where players are banned for a length of time rather than a number of matches.

The report also revealed that subscription television is not a route that the GAA is likely to embrace in any significant manner in the years ahead.

Duffy also dismissed the idea of a restruture of the championship in the style of a 'Champions League' format and claims that the current set-uo is best suited to the needs of the assosiation.

Joe Kernan: I'm relishing the battle for Division One survival with Galway
Belfast Telegraph - Thursday, 25 March 2010

Success in the National Football League does not simply means points in the bag, it also means cash in the bank.

indeed by my reckoning the difference between winning or losing a match at this stage of the season can mean the difference between lodging 30,000 Euros and 100,000 Euros in the county's back account.

Is it any wonder that nerves are becoming increasingly fraught as we all view the run-in to the league divisional finals?

Points and pounds are very important — points for status and pounds for survival. It is taking more and more money to run county teams so the chance to pick up cash cannot be bypassed if at all possible.

I hope that some of this wealth will now filter into the north and if not, then I hope it arrives in Galway where it will be very welcome!
