QuoteIf they have no de-icing fluid it might be a while before anyone lands there.

With the seriously long runway at Shannon and no recent snow, you could probably land.
You could not take off though:o

I'm assuming the statement means they can't de-ice aircraft. If that is the case then very few airlines would chance landing there as they mightn't get out as you said.

If they are referring to fluid for the runway then given that it is currently -7 there if the breaking action goes below .25μ then they are closed until the there is a thaw.

Either way pretty shabby preparation. I wonder are the other airports well stocked up in de-icing fluid for both aircraft and runways?

Just tried to leave my apartment a little earlier.  Cant get out.  Snow has built up about 3-4 feet at front and back doors. Having storm doors on dont help as they open out . Around 18 inches has fallen which is a nice fall but 50mph winds are making things very nasty.  Worst i have ever seen.  No work tomorrow i guess as its going to snow till at least lunchtime and the high winds will remain after the snow has eased.

good to see a thaw but the problem now is the drains along the road are blocked with snow so there is nowhere for the water to go.  was driving last nite and the standing water was unreal. hit it at any speed at all and the car heads for the hedge

No, but the missus was saying the news reported 500 bursts mains overnight so I'm not surprised.

QuoteNI thaw leaves thousands without mains water supply

Thousands of people across Northern Ireland have been left without access to mains water because of burst pipes.

NI Water said the rate of calls to its emergency line is "unprecedented" with more than 9,000 calls since Christmas Day.

A number of reservoirs are reported to have run dry after the pipes supplying them were damaged in the thaw.

In Coalisland, Lisnastrane reservoir was emptied, leaving about 3,000 homes in the surrounding area without water.

Mid-Ulster MLA Francie Molloy said the reservoir problems was leaving people confused about whether they had a burst pipe at their property.

NI Water is making bottled water available at locations across Northern Ireland for anyone who has been without a mains supply for 24 hours.

The main areas affected by the thaw include Belfast, Londonderry, Dungannon, Omagh, Armagh, Newry and Craigavon.

NI Water spokesperson Liam Mulholland said the company was doing all it could to help those affected.

"It's a situation which is constantly changing," he said.

"We have some areas that are in particular difficulty but from right across the province we are taking calls at unprecedented levels."

'Destroyed'

There are also reports from several areas of businesses having to close because of problems with pipes.

NI Water has issued advice to customers about how to prevent frozen pipes.

Meanwhile, Roads Service said it did not carry out salting overnight, but warned of excess water on roads.

The service said many gullies were still blocked with frozen ice allowing water to accumulate on roads.

It has advised motorists to continue to be extremely vigilant.

The SDLP has called for an emergency meeting of the Executive to discuss the impact of the extreme weather conditions on homes and businesses.

Water was off from Saturday night.  Listened to NI Water and thought it was the pipe from the road to the house because it might not be deep enough in the ground.  This morning I decided to look at the stopcock on the footpath.  Lo and behold it was full of water and it was frozen solid.  Multiple kettles of water later the ice was gone and the water back on.

The stopcock was not very deep in the ground and quite a number of the neighbours have the same problem.  Shoddy work by contractors for NI Water.

Before you rush to blame either NIW or there subcontractors there are a number of factors to be considered.

When was the main installed?

How did the water get into the boundary box? If it wasnt a leak inside the box then its certainly not the fault of NIW or there subcontractor if water has got inside the box.

What depth is the pipe from the box to your house?
