As Gerry said, depends on your needs.  I use MSN, Yahoo, Googletalk/gmail and Skype - very little differences between any of them for straightforward (typed) chat.  Digsby or Nimbuzz or any of a dozen other utilities will let you sign in to them (plus facebook chat and a range of others) all at once.
