Have we ever played a canal in footie before? If a player scores 3 goals, will they get a Panama hat as reward?

Sorry.  ;D

4 up now. That 4th goal from Kovalesvkies was class. He was shouldered GAA style in the penalty area that sent him flying, and he got up and still scored a goal. In fairness Panama out of their depth.

48 teams at this tournament. They would want to be making progress.

The likes of Tajikistan, New Caledonia, Haiti and Indonesia have all qualified.  This year's competition and the next four will be played in Qatar.  England lost their first game 3-0 to Venezuela.

Quote from: From the Bunker on October 28, 2025, 06:37:22 PMIve often seen Gaelic clubs put bans on dual lads playing soccer more times than I can count. They do it because they can. Soccer would probably do the same if they were in their shoes.

Are there any examples of soccer doing this in areas where they are stronger?
Yes, it happens frequently in Dublin anyway.
The outrage seems to be one way though.

I have never, ever heard of soccer doing anything of the sort in Dublin. But I am sure you have examples to prove me wrong.

Well that doesn't surprise me...

Anyway, it happened to my own son and his friends who were playing underage soccer. The coach told that he wasn't going to tolerate players combining GAA and soccer, and that they had to be all in with soccer only.
So the boys wanting to play both moved en-masse to a nearby soccer club because the coach made it clear he would be accommodating. The original team folded soon after due to lack of numbers.

A boy a year older, was scouted by a league of Ireland club and had no choice but to quit GAA in order to be accepted into their academy. This is someone who wasn't yet a teenager (to save you grasping for the 'professionals' mental reservation).

I know that Klub Kildare - the national league schoolboy outlet in Kildare ban their lads from playing any other sports

So a League of Ireland acadamy insists on specialisation in the way playing intercounty would, or being in a provincial rugby academy

The conversation was more about grassroots than the pro/semi pro bit.

Was there not a cork team that banned a number of Gaelic players at underage years ago as well until they got abuse and had to overturn it? Or maybe Kerry.
Most clubs locally tend to work with the gaa clubs especially at underage. It's the way it should be. But the reality is that there's coaches on both sides who overstep and try and force a selection rather than a ban per se. Our local soccer club are excellent and work with the gaa clubs to try and maximise involvement for the kids. It's the way it should be. Both sports can complement each other.

You asked for examples, you got examples, it doesn't suit your agenda, so you're trying to change the parameters.

How much money are players getting paid in academies, btw?

OK. I disagree that elite young players specialising in order to secure an acadamy place or be selected for a county side is what we are talking about. The conversation is about whether soccer does what some in the GAA do and force grassroots kids to chose. If it happens it is rare and isolated, and not the tactic often used in the GAA.

I don't think acadamy players anywhere get paid.

trueblue1234

Is it often used in the gaa these days?
