apologies if there already is a thread dedicated to this topic, couldn't be arsed searching through to check!

I'm thinking of getting broadband back into my house soon and was wondering if any of you's have any suggestions or recommendations regarding providers or good deals out there

Im particularly interested if anyone round omagh could let me no what sort of speeds are available at the mo, I have tested my postcode and best line available is 5.5mb.

I have researched a number of companies and considering plus net as they have an unlimited download package at a reasonable price.

Any help much appreciated...

Be sure to get one that knows where you are, and don't be coming on here complaining that your can't see the RTE GAA coverage online.
If at first you don't succeed, then goto Plan B

I can only get 5mb in my area and use BT Total Broadband. I'm happy enough with it.

Candyman

O2 home broadband. Unlimited downloads and free wireless router.
£7.34/month for O2 customers and £12.23 for others with upto 8meg speed

Google it and see the awards won this past 2 years. Have it myself and cant complain, especially for the price!!!!

My local phone exchange is Omagh and according to www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk my distance from this exchange is 940 metres as the crow flies and the maximum speed I am likely to achieve with standard ADSL on BT is 6Mbps.

However, the speed checker shows an average download speed of between 2128 and 3472 Kbps and an upload speed of between 377 and 378 Kbps.

I have a new N series Netgear router and these speeds are not good given the BT potential.  I believe a lot of the problem is with contention ratio, i.e. the number of my neighbours sharing the same cabling and their usage..

That's not great TYP, I'd contact BT and see what the story is with your speed.

I'm currently weighing up the options of 0.5Mbps for £25 a month or 1Mbps for £40 a month!  :-\

cheers lads, I'm out on the Dublin road so shouldn't be too far from the exchange. I'm currently using 3 mobile broadband which is handy when using the laptop out and about but the inconsistenly low connection speeds would drive u round the bend!
