Quote from: imtommygunn on January 09, 2025, 03:29:29 PMIt does seem that every team that goes up to division one becomes cannon fodder but I dunno how that cycle is broken. You would expect maybe Glenariff would go up and stay up with the youth coming through but that may take a while yet.

How about approaching the 'yoyo' clubs and offering them some assistance with coaching, a little investment or generic help with their set up. Knock the relegation on the head for a couple of years and try to build these teams up, give them time to get used to the levels and see how it goes.

Phase 1 of the league everyone plays everyone and yes you can take a big beating off some of the bigger teams, but they also will be playing without their county players.

The league then splits, top 5 and bottom 5 so you in theory should be more competitive in the second phase.

I don't think there's much wrong with that format.

JC

I was referring to the system in general, the same 3 teams winning and competing for the big prizes every year isnt healthy.

I think we need to broaden the base for the good of the game and the good of the county set up etc.

Clubs will benefit in the longer term from a more competitive environment.

I hear what you are saying, but how do teams like Ballycastle, Rossa, the Johnnies and St Enda's close the gap on Loughgeil, Cushendall and Dunloy if you aren't at the very least competitive with them in the league and this current format allows for that and a bit of jeopardy in having to put a bit of effort into Phase 1 or you won't get the return fixtures and lose out on the gate money and better competition in the run up to championship.

The bigger debate is how do the likes of Carey, Creggan, Glenariffe, Glenravel, St Pauls etc bridge the gap on the tier 2 clubs if you like and the only way to do that if give it a lash in Div 1 when the chance arises.

It has to be pointed out the Glenravel gave Ballycran their fill of it in the relegation play off,so the gap maybe between the bottom 5 in Div 1 and the top teams in Div 2 isn't so wide, but hurling is an unforgiving sport on the scoreboard at times.

NAG1

JC that is absolutely those clubs that I would be advocating for some level of support.

This is what I think the county should be looking at as opposed to throwing crazy money at the top of the tree that will have limited impact.

Support the middle tier teams to bridge the gap and help the lower tier teams to become more stable within the leagues.

As Faughs says it's very much a numbers game though, if you don't have the numbers that's a big gap to bridge, so get those GDO's into the local primary schools around these clubs and build that relationship and bond with the kids and club as like ourselves we don't have the people to go in there for us other than one retired lad (whose as grumpy as fĂșck at times  ;D ) and the new "participation" GDO in there once a week which is a start.

let it fly

Any news on the county panel at this stage any big opt outs or young fellas brought in?be great to see a few from junior and intermediate clubs get a go under davy

The likes of Carey dont even have a primary school I believe and numbers are well down in many other parish schools. Many of these 2nd tier clubs may have generational success, Cushendun in the 90s being a prime example, but without numbers within your own parish at grassroots there is no conveyor belt and continuing in the lower divisons or amalgamations are the only options left available.

Saw on Instagram that Limerick beat us 1-31 to 0-21.

Let no-one say the best hurlers belong to the past. They are with us now, and better yet to come

Anyone got the starting team/panel that went down to limerick.

Just don't think you will see that published anywhere

Out of interest why not? I note limericks team in that article. Everything seems very hush hush regards the hurlers atm. People in the know appear to be keeping tight lipped? I think people are genuinely interested about the challenge games and news on the panel etc at this stage... not long to dublin game now. Hope alls going well so far under davy.

There was a few people down at Dunsilly when I did a game, people knew about it, are you asking the right people? I wouldn't look to ask people on a forum tbf, anyone at your club involved? Do you know anyone at the county?

The gates were open, think someone mentioned before they were going to play Limerick, you coulda headed down to watch that game?

I'd say Davy Fitz wouldn't be going around telling the PRO that it's on. Good chance to try things without prying eyes.

Plenty of games to watch in the upcoming league.

Just see it mentioned on other county forums about their match details etc.. I guess the majority of us will wait for the league games.. hopefully we've a good league - fingers crossed.

Not at all nervous lol. Just interested to be honest with you. Looking forward to league but I actually enjoyed the Walsh Cup. Pity it's gone for now - hey ho... from what you've seen what do you make of the teams style of play at this early stage? Had you said previously that it's changed noticeabley from how Darren set the lads up?
