Crazy crash, he was hit on the head by debris from another car and knocked out then crashed into the tyre wall at full pelt. It was all caught on the camera from his car.

Apparently the spring fractured his helmet and fractured his skull and eye socket. Lucky to be alive.

he is indeed. wonder what speed he was doing and what speed the spring was travelling at, it must have been a hell of an impact to do that to his helmet

Apparently he was doing 250mph and the spring was less than this. Kinetic enery of spring and speed of car would have meant a serious force.

watching it earlier on it seems that he must have been conscious as he was able to apply the brakes before he hit the tyre wall

Sure about that? :-\

Did his helmet have to be cut off? I imagine it would have done more harm than good taking it off normally

It was a freak accident, there is no need for the driver to be enclosed. The car stood up well to the impact, you could say the same for the helmet even though they are not designed for this type of impact. Massa`s injury could have been much worse if the spring had come straight through the visor.

There would have been some force of the spring hitting the crash helmet considering the damage it did. Read that the spring could have weighed up to 1kg. Any physics heads about that could work out the force of the impact given the speed of the car, spring and weight of the spring. Was no good at physics at school.

You would need to know how fast the spring was travelling to work out the speed of the impact, but Massa was travelling at 170mph when the accident happened, he hit the brake immediately but he also kept his right foot on the throttle. The throttle was fully opened when he hit the tyre wall.

I hear Massa's career could be over - apparently has suffered damage to one of his eyes.
