Former GAA player and AFL legend Jim Stynes has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and starts treatment tomorrow. The Brownlow medallist and AFL consecutive games record holder and current Melbourne Football Club president noticed a lump on his back three weeks ago which turned out to be cancerous and has spread to other parts of his body. Best wishes go to Jimmy and his family as he starts the fight of his life.

Any Irish person who was in Oz during the late 80's/early 90's when the world was a different place could have nothing but the highest regard for Jimmy Stynes-his winning the Bronlow Medal was a source of great pride, breaking all consecutive fixtures played records when you see the trouble other Irish lads have had with the game, putting himself about, BIG TIME, when playing for Ireland in the 1990 compromise rules series down there, and still sneaking out for the Odd game of Gaelic Footy with the lads in Melbourne much against the wishes of his Club. Former all Black Number 8 Zinzan Brooke makes some great comments about coming across Jim on the Gaelic Football pitch down under.

Hope to god he wins this battle

Can't get you a link mate. It was from Zinzans biography, well one of them. Himself and another All Black of the time Bernie McCahill used play a bit of Gaelic Footy in the off season to keep the eye in. The represented NZ/Auckland or whoever in the Australasian games and came up against Victoria including one Jimmy Stynes whom Zinzan knew nothing off. He described his attempts to swat Jim off once or twice to absolutely no avail as he came back for more, grinning more manically each time. Brooke asked some question about where Jim's raw meat supplies were being stored.

Yet again, can't speak highly enough of him and what he's achieved, I'll even resort to a bit of prayer on the man's behalf.

With you on that prayer Anglo. Have been in Melbourned twice and still have alot of family there. Stynes is simply revered there for his achievements on and off the pitch. Make you proud to be Irish over there.
