For re-sale it would be better to have MOT but trade-in wouldnt be as bad.
They'll offer you a great price on the trade in anyway... as they will recoup that on the price of the new motor!! ;-)

Trade it in asap even if you have to spend a few extra pound on a new motor, it won't be 3-4k and you'll have a warranty although there are places who won't take cars unless they have at least 3 months left on their MOT
