From Hoganstand:

Meath football legend Graham Geraghty has been hailed a hero after coming to the assistance of a hackney driver he found beaten up on the side of a street in Athboy.

The hackney driver, from nearby Kells, was allegedly assaulted by up to four youths in a vicious attack at around 3am last Monday. One eyewitness said Geraghty's quick thinking and assistance "probably saved the man's life".

But the 1999 All-Ireland winning captain, who retired from inter-county football last year, played down his role in coming to the victim's rescue.

"He was lying in the street in a bad way, but I only did what anyone else would have done," said Geraghty, who lives locally.

"I didn't see what happened and there was no-one around when I found him on the ground. My wife rang the ambulance and the paramedics took him away.

"I don't want to make a fuss of it. I'm just glad that he's doing okay."

The victim is said to be in a "stable condition" at Our Lady's Hospital in Navan.
