Aside from the excitement of the local parish pump politics, the big news is Conservative and right wing gains right across Europe. The next parliament is going to be dominated by Conservatives and the loony far right. The Lisbon treaty wants to give more power to this parliament. It may be democracy, but its a frightening prospect.

The only problem with Joe getting the seat is that he's going to give it up for that loon Clare Daly once the next general election comes around.

Harsh Donagh, I think Joe will be happy enough to do the Euro job - he'll have a replacement immediately for his council seat in Castleknock, and I think Clare Daly should be able to get a seat in Dublin North.  She's been an excellent councillor, and I don't know where this looney stuff is coming from.

Surely Higgins will be dying to get back into the Dáil Billy?

SF topped the poll in a couple of wards in Donegal County Council, Frank McBrearty Jr (he of the Morris tribunal fame) also got elected for Labour.

Dunno TAC, he'll be surrounded by more 'like minds' in Brussels rather than ploughing his lonely furrow in Kildare St, and may be in a position to have more influence on legislation over there.  I don't know, to be honest.

The poll here was very close apart from the normal  mad SF vote .

Still lots of people voting FF. I can't see why
Anyway, long story short... is a phrase whose origins are complicated and rambling.

Gnevin, what do you mean by that? (genuine question) Was the SF vote not close? What was mad about it?

SF  - 29 (19.5%) , SF as far as I know didn't get anything like this nationally . The SF vote is these polls is always skewed .

Declan Ganley wanted a recount of the bundles late last night.  Don't know why it's taking so long now. TV3 just reporting that the recheck has lowered Ganley vote by 3,000!
