The Ballad Of Drumcree

My name is Samuel Corrigan, my friends all call me Sam
If you'll buy a man a drink then you can too
I've got a tale of much importance in the history of our land
So grab yourself a seat, I'll tell it through

I'm proud to be an Orangeman just like my father was
Upholding the traditions of our creed
There's many like us in the land that's loyal to the cause
Though some would call it bigotry and greed

T'was the 7th of July, the year was 1996
When we set ourselves to march through old Drumcree
But soon we found our way was blocked by police with riot sticks
In this country of the pious and the free

Now it was our right to march that way, we've done for many years
And we swore that we would never compromise
And we faced them there five days and nights, hate ringing in our ears
But violence, fear and hate were our allies

Free men we have always been and free men we will stay
So stand you boys aside and let us through
We've marched in our tradition and it's always been our way
And we're free to do just what it tells us to

The twelfth it was approaching and the country lived in fear
And held its breath to see what we would do
Then the word came through from Annisley we'd waited there to hear
"Bring down the barricades and let them through!"

"Your pipes and whistles must stay silent", that was Annisley's demand
But still our message rang out true and real
We have the right to the remembrance of the wars that split our land
And no-one has the right to let it heal

Meanwhile down at Stormont all our leaders sat and talked
They were trying to bring peace at any cost
But surely you can see my friend the reason that we walk
We don't want peace if our traditions will be lost

Well victory was won that day, let there be no mistake
Though some would say the peace was jeopardised
Our land may be condemned to years of killing and of pain
But through them all we'll march with heads held high.

I was wanting to put a wee compilation together with songs either about Armagh or referencing Armagh.

I can't think of enough to get a worthwhile cd out of it

1. Boys of County Armagh
2. Bard of Armagh
3. Sweet Dromintee - Tommy Makem
4. Boys of Mullaghbawn - Christy Moore
5. Hills of South Armagh - Frances Black

Any others?

There's any amount of Republican ones - Fighting men from Crossmaglen, Auf Weidershen to Crossmaglen, Hills of Kiltybane, Ballad of Raymond McCreesh etc.

Been a couple of songs about Cullyhanna I've heard in recent years - Only 17 and My Cullyhanna Home.

Right few Armagh supporters once - Come on Armagh, Armagh are the Champions, Stevie from Killeavy, Daddy's Dream. Not exactly musical masterpieces in the Makem style but worth a listen some of them.

As I dream about movies they won't make of me when I'm dead

"Low lie the pants of Pat Molloy"  ;D

:D :D :D :D

Is he still alive????

I thought Pat would have had one bottle of bo too many at this stage. Fair play to him.
Armagh, the one true love of a mans life.

La Grange by ZZ Top.

The Iceman

I heard a song called the 'Banks of the Callan' and "Banbrook Belle" - Cathy Kelly had a CD of songs out about 5 or 6 years ago of local songs - I am sure some of the OG's boys could get a copy for you (she is their current physio).
I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight

fitzroyalty

"the green green grass of cullyhanna" or "the ballad of carrickasticken"

Candyman

"raise your glass to the smugglin' men from middletown, keady and crossmaglen..."  ;D

the Transit Van!!! ;)

Over the Bar

"It'll be lonely this Christmas" (without you to hold) - sung since 2003!

balladmaker

It's already be done....Gerry Cunningham had no bother filling two sides of a cassette tape about 20 years ago!

Onlooker

I seem to remember Len Graham singing a very catchy song called, I think, "The Granemore Hare".  Would that be an Armagh song?.

Onion Bag

We are Orange we are white, we are f**king dynamite, la la la la, la la la la la
Hats, Flags and Head Bands!

Aine Woods - Flash the lights

Strictly speaking a Louth song (she's from the Hack) but enough of it is about Armagh.
