Meath earn Ulster minor final draw

MEATH minor football appears to be in a healthy state based on the evidence from Breffni Park, Cavan on last Thursday night where extra-time failed to break the deadlock in the Ulster MFL decider against Tyrone.
Meath could have won. On the overall balance of play they probably would have deserved it, but there were no complaints about the outcome and the big problem now will be finding a suitable date for the replay.
Meath`s focus will switch back to the Leinster MFC quarter-final against Dublin now and that game will take place on Saturday, 10th May at Parnell Park.
The Metropolitan `spies` negotiated the route to Cavan to download some information on the threat that the Royal County might pose. There was sufficient evidence to suggest that the Dublin boys will have to be at their best to survive next Saturday`s encounter.
Tyrone took a big reputation into Thursday night`s game with big victories achieved over Louth, Derry, Donegal, Antrim and Fermanagh.
The only link for comparison purposes in form is the Louth game. Meath made hard work of handling Louth in the opening round of the Leinster MFC at Pairc Tailteann and Tyrone recorded an 8-13 to 0-4 victory over the Wee County.
Tyrone emerged from their group with a scoring difference of plus 76 which was a whopping 40 points greater than Meath.
That all suggested that the Ulster boys would pose a considerable threat, especially as Meath were forced to field without the suspended Ciaran Lenehan and the injured trio of Tommy Johnson, Andrew Tormey and Jamie Owens.
Without that quartet, Meath manager Pat Coyle had to shuffle the pack and was forced to deploy Mark Battersby at centre-back. The St Vincent`s / Curraha player proved to be an able deputy for Johnson, but his absence from the attack was noticeable.
Despite all the enforced changes, Meath were on lever term (1-4 to 0-7) at the interval with Oldcastle`s Paddy Gilsenan reacting quickly for a 20th minute goal after Jake Regan`s shot was blocked.
Mark Collins (two), William Carry and Darragh McNamara pointed while Tyrone kept in touch with points from Ciaran Girvan (two), Kyle Coney, Paddy McNiece, Conor O`Neill, Matthew Donnelly and Diarmuid McNulty.
Meath`s injury list lengthened when midfielder David Ryan limped out of the action close to the interval. That forced Michael Newman into the centre where he formed a good partnership with the hard-working Damien Carroll.
Bective substitute Darragh Smith took over at centre-forward and contributed a goal nine minutes into the second-half after Collins made a probing run. That gave Meath a 2-8 to 0-8 advantage and a good platform to build on. 
When Dunboyne goalkeeper Padraig Curran made a spectacular finger-tip save from McNulty with 12 minutes remaining it looked even better for the Royals.
However, fortune favoured Tyrone with eight minutes remaining when McNulty finished to the net after Niall McKenna`s point attempt hit the top of the post and fell kindly for the full-forward.
That left the minimum in it and Ryan Pickering drew the sides level (2-8 to 1-11) soon after. Both sides had chances subsequently and traded a point apiece on the way to extra-time.
Thrills and spills and drama were the hallmark of extra-time as Regan for Meath and McNiece for Tyrone traded a brace of points each to end the first period at 2-11 to 1-14.
The pattern was repeated in the second-half, but Meath needed a late Mark McCormack point to salvage a draw. Both teams deserved the applause and appreciation of a small crowd as they left the pitch.

Judging by last nights results I think this years seniors is going to be very open. Clonoe appear to be flying.
Carmen beat Cookstown a little handier than the scoreline suggests with the forward missing chances galore. Father Rocks pulled a serious amount of men behind the ball and played with 4 forwards the whole game. Munroe showed a good tactical awareness last night, hauling a defender off after about 10 minutes and putting a ball carrying forward in.
It is hard to judge by last nights game but Raymond Mulgrew at centre forward never touched leather. He looks to be a player low in confidence at the minute.

Yeah going by last nights results Carmen and the O Raihillys appear to be flying. Dromore also maximun points as well. We got our first ever victory in top flight football last night with a late goal proving to be decisive. Some very shocking results in Intermediate - Rock beating Moy and the Tatts continue to surprise (fair play to both). Philly Jordan got a straight red in the Moy game.

snappiered that was a very important result for you last night, and a great response after your first to games. We had a good contest with coalisland and really should have won by more. We missed two great goal chances in the 1st half. Big crowd at it. Why are you so surprised by the Rocks win afterall they were in the fnal of the All Ireland last year and that surely must have brought them on considerably and lets be honest the Moy are a joke in the first place, they would not have the passion that the Rock would have

Knock Yer Mucker In Cas seems to have yous going well. I was very impressed with yous last Sun and had an idea yous would be fit for the Fianna. It a massive result for yous. When yous last beat them? Yous will also relish taking on Errigal in the Cship. Just like Orangeman i fancied the Moy to be very strong contendors for honours in Intermediate this season. Ardboe crawled their way back into it, Wee Brian pullin the strings from wing half forward, young Coney kickin a few frees, kept them in touch till the half. Wee Roddy, do you not think that Carmen were very poor last night in periods.Our defence was again superb but the forwards kicked some bad wides. Munroe done what he felt he had to do last night but i think he took off the player who was on the ball most in the first ten minutes. I have seen players being took off like that before in Carmen and there has been a reaction from the player but I looked carefully at the incident last night and there was none. This is a sign that he has the changing room and when Carmen are united they are a tough cookie to crack. The rumblings of this past 3 years seem to be gone.
