never kickt a ball

Report by By Geoffrey Gillis

Tyrone made it two wins from two League starts, at windswept Breffni Park yesterday afternoon, when a 1-6 scoring spell inside eight minutes of the restart sent them on their way to a comprehensive victory over Cavan.  Hopes were high within the team, that they could build on their impressive opening round triumph over Fermanagh, and having weathered
a lot of Cavan pressure they came good, when it mattered to preserve their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Having held wind advantage first, the signs were ominous for Cavan, as they were trailing by three points, at the break. Cathal McErlean's fortuitous 24th minute goal helping Tyrone into a narrow 1-6 to 0-6 interval lead, before Tyrone found their range in the second half, to ease their way over the winning line. The late dismissal of Mickey McCullough, the only blemish on what was an otherwise impressive team display laced with some excellent long
range striking from Paul Lavery, Peadar McMahon and top scorer Cathal
McErlean.

Points from Michael Hill and Anthony Sheridan gave Cavan the early initiative, but Tyrone responded strongly with Paul Lavery pointing before McErlean levelled proceedings in the 5th minute following a superb cross from Paddy Devine. Noel Hurson edged Tyrone ahead but Cavan with Paul Sheridan, Seamus Lee, Finnian Coyle and Ronan O'Hagan to the fore, continued to match them score for score. O'Hagan and Seamus Lee pointing for the hosts, before a second McErlean point levelled the game, at 0-4 each on 16 minutes.

Cavan failed to press home their advantage and having hit several bad wides, they were made to pay in the 24th minute, when a Lavery shot came back off the woodwork to an alert McErlean, who scrambled the sliothar over the line for a 1-4 to 0-4 lead. A Lavery free extended their lead before Cavan replied with an excellent long range Paul Sheridan score. In the 31st minute, Peadar McMahon capped a lengthy run with a point before Tyrone goalkeeper John Devlin was called into action to thwart the efforts of Paul Sheridan.

A second Anthony Sheridan free did close the gap to three, at the break (1-6 to 0-6) but having played with the elements, Cavan were facing an uphill struggle on the restart. And so it proved. Tyrone ending the game within eight minutes of the
half, as they eased into a match winning 2-12 to 0-6 lead. Substitute Paul Hughes (0-2), McErlean and McMahon (0-2) all tagged on points in the opening seven minutes, before Paul Lavery and John Kerr combined to send Justin Kelly through for an 8th minute goal.

A John Kerr point opened up a twelve point lead and with Noel Hurson, Paul Hughes, Lavery, Leigh Moore and Terry McIntosh driving them forward, the result was never in any doubt. Cavan were struggling against the wind, but they did gain a lifeline in the 9th minute, when Ronan O'Hagan guided home a rebound, after Tyrone 'keeper John Devlin parried an Edward Dalton shot. Paul Sheridan added a point for a 2-12 to 1-7 score line, but by now Tyrone were in full flow.
Kelly, McMahon, Terry McIntosh, McErlean, Lavery and Devine stretched the lead to fourteen points by the 19th minute and when McMahon registered his fifth of the afternoon Tyrone held a commanding 2-19 to 1-7 lead.

Paul Sheridan tagged on another two frees in quick succession, before Tyrone lost the services of Mickey McCullough. McCullough, who was only on the field eight minutes, collected a straight red card in the 30th minute for lashing out, at Anthony Sheridan. Cavan goalkeeper Darren Sheridan was yellow carded in the same incident but Tyrone continued to keep the score board ticking over with a late flurry of points from McErlean and Lavery (0-2) preserving their unbeaten start to the new campaign.

Fr Gerard McAleer? I haven't seen much sign of him recently. Does anyone know if he's still involved?

Fr G has had a bad flu for well over a month now, but I presume will be back on board by the time the leagues over.

Before the AIF I can understand but an injection before a league game in Feb????

phpearse

Didn't think there was county training last night. Thought it was just on Thursday night. Team would have trained with their clubs last night, so I'm thinking he hurt it with his club.
