In Donald Trump's telling, London is governed by a "horrible, vicious, disgusting mayor", Sadiq Khan. European leaders are "weak", their nations "decaying" and the EU was established to "screw" the US.  Trump reserves much of his sharpest criticism for America's allies in Europe. The US president's frustration with Nato members over their failure to meet the alliance's defence spending targets was well known.
