Doing the sums how would it pan out?

We can either buy the oil and gas from America or Russia. Europe and most of Africa will not be able to source it anywhere else.

Without access to America or Russia Europe would last ~6 months on its energy reserves.

But most of the worlds oil is in the middle east.

That's Producers though. Thats not the same as reserves. The Middle East has the biggest oil reserves in the world. Venezuela also has massive reserves.

Look-Up!

Very undiplomatic language from Trump on Europe. Something like a drunk vet would come out with at the bar except he's neither of those.

Might be no harm long term to get away from US and develop European defence autonomy. Culturally and economically too. Europe has it's problems but a much fairer society. I said before the election Trump is the leader they deserve. The embodiment of the American capitalist. The latest mineral deal with Ukraine sums them up. Rape you while pretending to be your friend. Old weapons for minerals. Kinda like the old colonists did in Africa except it was slaves instead of precious metals.

I would tend to agree. As painful as it will be economically I think there should be a collective decision within Europe to sideline the US. Easy to say but not as easy to implement unfortunately. But I think some countries must be looking at the US/ Trump and thinking, we just can't work with this guy anymore, he's too volatile for any long term planning.

It's always been America, he just removed the mask. And it's not just about him. With the way the political climate is over there, it's going to get worse and more unstable with the internal bickering.

But if they're that thick to swallow BS about getting ripped off by the rest of the world, f**k em. The world economy is not zero sum, it's quid pro quo. Insular and non co-operative economies never work out too well. Like to see how they'd get on without the rest of the world propping up their currency.

Of course it will be very painful. Brexit was terrible for all concerned but there was something very satisfying about seeing the incredulity of the Brits actually being held to their word.

Trump is not the United States. He is not the people of the United States. He was elected to put an end to inflation. He can't with tariffs.
If the Democrats flip the House in the next mid.terms Trump will be hamstrung. If the GOP lose the next Presidential election everything that is changed now will be changed back.

Look-up is correct with the stability stuff.

Let's say the Dems get their shit together and win back the House and then the presidency next time out. What happens in the 2030s? Trump might be dead at that point, but will the deranged base that foisted him upon the planet be?

The Dem president might seek to mend the fences with Europe and Canada and the rest of the world, but what happens when the next Trump arrives four or eight years later? Maybe Trump's idiocy will change minds within the US over the next four years, but for now, most Americans either don't know or don't care about geopolitics when it comes to national politics. Trump is for them, Kamala is for for they/their. That's what matters.

Europe needs to free itself from being so reliant on American market and military ties.

One party rule is bad for the country

From my vantage point it is going to be extremely difficult for mainstream/centrist Democrats to break from the fringes of the party-just look at what happened to Seth Moulton. (As the dad of 2 young girls he had the audacity to say he didn't want to see them playing sport against biological males)

One other issue the Democrats have is they have little appeal to young men. There's a guy I know-late 20s, Union Worker, Eversource employee. This guy is up at 4:00 AM, drives to Boston for a 6:00 AM start. Has a hard dirty and dangerous job working for the gas company.

Midterms will be key

MAGA is very vulnerable if inflation remains out of control.Trump is tearing the arse out of it and doing nothing for ordinary people. Regular GOP politicians could take over the party down the road. It is all chaotic and very uncertain.

Europe has pivoted towards defence in the last month given the feedback over Ukraine.
