From NYT  (just to clarify: when they write "limiting Republicans' opportunity to ... impeach and remove him", this is misleading. Biden can still be impeached, as that happens in the House.  To be removed from office, that requires a 60-40 vote in the senate, which is why Trump was twice impeached, but not removed from office either time.  So holding the senate or narrowly failing to do so wouldn't make a difference in terms of the likelihood of Biden being removed).

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/13/us/politics/senate-democrats-republicans.html

While their margin of control in the chamber will remain razor thin — and far short of the supermajority needed to pass major legislation — it constitutes a lifeline for Mr. Biden, limiting Republicans' opportunity to wreak havoc on his agenda or to impeach and remove him or other members of his administration.

Democrats will retain the power to unilaterally confirm scores of additional Biden-appointed judges. They will also keep control of the Senate floor, allowing them to ensure that, should Republicans win the House majority, any legislation that could frustrate Mr. Biden's agenda or make life politically difficult for him and other Democrats never sees the light of day in the other chamber.

Yup. What about the debt ceiling though? Can't the House Rethuglicans go back to the old hostage-taking trick of threatening a sovereign debt default if they don't get some bogus demand met?

Maybe. There's been some talk of preemptively raising the ceiling so it doesn't get to that.

That's it! Democratic Senate!

So much for the "red wave!"

Without being too clued up on thr intricacies of the 2 houses, is there any merit to having one without the other? My understanding was you needed both to pass legislation?

Typically a divided government is viewed as goo for the economy and the stock market

Also can be perceived as positive from a political standpoint

The stock market is going to continue to tank . JP Morgan have a 50% estimate of a crash next year.

That'd be smart. Rethuglicans rely on low-information voters who don't understand that the debt ceiling is about paying bills that have already been run up

No he won't.

He's the only Republican Biden can and will beat.

People are fed up with the Trump freak show. Multiple elections have shown this. If making the libs cry is your thing, the likes of DeSantis can do it just as well within the normal bounds of politics, without the naked racism, narcissism, corruption, wannabe-dictator-tendencies, and mafia boss-like demand for personal loyalty to him above all else.

I think a Republican civil war is a very likely outcome

Trumps base hate centrists/RINOS almost as much as they hate Democrats

But a lot of Trumps base have completely soured on him after the midterms-they woke up the morning after the election and instead of an X Box found a lump of coal in their sock

After leading an unsuccessful coup Trump is now running for president. The last person to do that was Hitler.

Trump got no chance, I say there's a fair bet he not ever  get the republican nomination but got to take into consideration how many dummies, crackpots, gun toting and racists elements have his backing.

The page 26 story is pretty good as well

Been there, Don that
With just 720 days to go before the next election, a Florida retiree made the surprise announcement that he was running for president. In a move no political pundit saw coming, avid golfer Donald J. Trump kicked things off at Mar-a-Lago, his resort and classified-documents library. Trump, famous for gold-plated lobbies and for firing people on realtity television, will be 78 in 2024. If elected, Trump would tie Joe Biden as the oldest president to take office. His cholesterol levels are unknown, but his favorite food is a charred steak with ketchup. He has stated that his qualifications for office include being a "stable genius." Trump also served as the 45th president.

Please God, if a decent republican ran he would lose all those looney, conspiracy theory nut case voters to an independent trump. That'd split the hard right vote in two and leave an easy run for a Democrat.
