Huddlestone would be a better option. Cattermole more of a Masch sort of player. Huddlestone can pass a ball which Liverpool will need is Alonso ever leaves  ::)

Agree totally. I think that Tom Huddlestone is one of the best young players in the PL. He had a bit of a weight / fitness problem under Ramos but he is so naturally talented, I think that he will be a serious influence on whatever team he plays in over the coming years. Great passer and he's a a pretty big lad as well. Capello seems keen to keep an eye on him too.

Echo reporting that Alonso has handed in a written transfer request.

It would appear that its a case of getting the full value for him or Madrid can fook off.

Hand written or typed?

If a player doesnt request a transfer and a club sell him doesnt the player get 5% of the fee or something?

Written on back of an ESB bill.

I would think it all depends on the individual contract but would assume that in majority that a transfer request forgo's all rights to a pay-off on transfer fee or remaining element of contract.

I wouldn't be sure of Liverpools CB this year, can see three of them getting a fair amount of games. Plus Skrtel maye miss start of season and like Agger last year, may struggle to get back in.

For your Fantasy team go for Reina as keeper (got a few assists last year) plus Johnson, who will hopefully play most games and get a few assits/goals.

QuoteLiverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has edged closer to Real Madrid after handing in a transfer request at Anfield, according to reports.

The Spain international has been at the centre of a long-running transfer saga as La Liga giants Madrid have made no secret of their desire to secure a deal.

Liverpool have refused to budge from an asking price for Alonso in the region of £30million, which has stalled any potential move to the Bernabeu.

But the Reds may now be prepared to allow the former Real Sociedad star to leave following accounts he has submitted a written transfer request to the club's hierarchy.

Speculation suggests a deal will be struck with Madrid within the next couple of days for a fee reported to be in the region of £25m.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has maintained he does not want to sell Alonso, but the midfielder is said to have been angered by his manager's apparent desire to sell in order to finance an unsuccessful pursuit of Gareth Barry last summer.

The Reds signed Alonso for £10.5m in 2004, shortly after Benitez arrived on Merseyside, and the 27-year-old helped secure the famous UEFA Champions League final success over AC Milan in his debut season.

Can hardly blame him after Rafa messing him around. Great deal for Real at £25 Million. Good business.

Would you quit with your bullshit. Up to last summer, Alonso's form slumped over the previous season. Rafa had a choice to get someone in at a cost of shipping someone out. At the time, no club was willing to meet a modest fee of 12-16m, no-one bar Juventus even showed any real interest.
Weather it was this motivation that turned his form round, we don't know. For alot of managers this works and the player stays and his form remains high.

If he had been messed round by Rafa, he wouldn't have started the vast majority of games last season. Rafa clearly rates him but had a choice last year to replace like with like. He may have anticipated that Alonso will have wanted to move home at some stage and was heading it off at the pass.

Rafa owes Alonso nothing, Liverpool owe him nothing. Its a business. Bad news to be losing him but its happening.
