QuoteWhereabouts are you from? I remember around the Christmas/New Year period in late 1995 when the night time temperatures got down to -17c!

I think there was one particular killer frost around 27th December in 1995. But any talk of 1963 neglects the greats snow of 1982 when it was seriously cold for a week and people were walking up and down the canals in Dublin after the first couple of days.

from met.ie
the lowest observed 20th century air temperature was -18.8°C recorded at Lullymore, Co. Kildare on 2nd January 1979. The lowest observed grass minimum temperature was -19.6°C at Dublin (Glasnevin) on 12th January 1982 which was almost matched by the -19.5°C measured at Lullymore, Co. Kildare on 2nd January 1979.

Wikipedia, that paragon of information, says "The lowest-ever recorded temperature in Northern Ireland was on 1 January 1979, when −17.5°C was recorded at Magherally, near Banbridge, County Down". Now I am not trying to downgrade Castlederg's claim to fame, but it is interesting that Dublin and Kildare were lower than this, something that I wouldn't have expected.

Who would have thought that Glasnevin would be the most frigid of all.  ;)

Minus 30 on this morning (why did I think walking would be a good idea) - I think the lads have gone inside for the day. They may not make an appearance until the afternoon I think
